June Sea Turtle Nesting Hits 48 on Alabama Beaches
Red lights urged as turtle nesting season continues

Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — Sea turtle nesting season is in full swing along Alabama’s beaches. In June, Share the Beach volunteers recorded 48 nests, including 44 loggerheads and four Kemp’s Ridleys. No green sea turtles were seen nesting. Volunteers are urging beachgoers to stay mindful of how their actions affect these endangered species.
Also in June, there were 63 false crawls—when a sea turtle comes ashore but returns to the water without nesting. These are often caused by bright lights, deep holes, or obstacles left on the sand. To reduce stress on nesting turtles, the public is urged to follow the “Clean, Dark, Flat, and Quiet” beach guidelines.
Keeping beaches dark at night is especially important. Flashlights, phone lights, and house lighting can confuse both nesting turtles and hatchlings. If you must use a light on the beach at night, choose a red-filtered flashlight or a red LED. These are less likely to disturb turtles.
Volunteers also encourage people to remove furniture, knock down sandcastles, and fill in holes each evening. Staying at least 30 feet away from turtles and remaining still and quiet can make a big difference.
Nesting season continues through October. To report a sea turtle sighting or track, call 866-SEA-TURTLE (866-732-8878). With community support, these ancient creatures can continue to return safely to Alabama’s shores year after year.
