Doc’s Seafood Shack Nears Opening in Foley

Downtown Foley may soon allow open container zones

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — A second Doc’s Seafood Shack and third restaurant in the Doc’s group, is closer to opening in Foley. The new restaurant is nearing completion in the southeast corner of the intersection of the South Juniper Street extension and County Road 20. At an upcoming council meeting, the owners of the restaurant are seeking a liquor license for the new eatery. It is part of several new businesses or multi-family complexes to be built along the South Juniper Street extension.

 

The Foley city council will meet in a joint regular/work session at 4 p.m. on July 7 in council chambers at city hall. Two package stores also have requests on the agenda for liquor licenses including Sai Murti in the new Publix shopping center in the southwest corner of the intersection of County Road 20 and the Foley Beach Express and Goodfellas Fin Cigars located at 1013 N. McKenzie St.

 

At its next meeting, the Foley Planning Commission will consider a site plan for BJ’s Wholesale Club planned for the southern end of the South Juniper Street extension. Other businesses looking to open along the extension are a climate-controlled storage facility on 3.64 acres approved in September. In August, the commission received a rezoning request for a South Juniper Street multi-family planned unit development on 50.48 acres located east of South McKenzie Street and south of Miflin Road. The request is to change from extended business and planned development district to PUD

 

During the meeting, the council will also:

 

  • Have a public hearing on amendments to the zoning ordinance. It received a favorable recommendation in the May 21 planning commission meeting.
  • Have a public hearing on a rezoning request from Eleanor K. Flowers to change land located south of County Road 12 South and east of the Foley Beach Express from agriculture open space to extended business district for an RV and boat storage lot. The rezoning received a favorable recommendation in the May 21 planning commission meeting.
  • Read a proclamation for Frank and Jennie Rikard Day as July 7 for their service to the community.
  • Recognize Eva Bailey for her 100th birthday on June 29.
  • See a presentation about the Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermen’s Market.
  • Have an introduction and first reading of an ordinance amendment stating that no more than three unrelated people can live in the same dwelling. A second public hearing date will also be set for this amendment.
  • Have an introduction and first reading of an ordinance to establish an entertainment district in downtown Foley where patrons can walk around with alcohol. Orange Beach has two districts at The Wharf and Perdido Beach Resort/San Roc Cay.
  • Have a second reading of an ordinance to approve traffic calming measures and speed limits in the southeast quadrant of the city.
  • Consider approving a façade grant for 112 W. Laurel Ave. at the offices of attorneys Milam and Milam.
  • Discuss approving the installation of lights on West Birch Avenue from State Route 59 to North Pine Street for $778.92.
  • Hear a request from Calvary Chapel of Foley for the use of Heritage Park for a prayer day for the community.
  • Hear a request from the Jehovah Witness community to use Heritage Park to display free Bible literature.
  • Consider granting a waiver from a moratorium for the properties located at the northwest corner of Pride Drive and Juniper Street for a mixed-use project consisting of commercial and garden/patio homes and for the Grove located at the southwest corner of Springsteen Lane and Bender Road. There are 40 homes planned along with 80,000 square feet of commercial space on the 37.08 acres in Pride Drive proposed project.
  • Consider approving a supplemental agreement with Volkert for north and south apron pavement maintenance at the Foley Airport with a 75 percent match from the Alabama Department of Transportation totaling $376,337. The council will also discuss approving the grant application from ALDOT for the project.
  • Consider purchasing a “tactical reconnaissance robot system” for $17,290 for the police department from ReconRobotics from Edina, Minnesota. The small robot is known for durability and stealth during tactical operations.
  • Discuss buying a speed alert radar message sign for the police department including trailer for $23,738.
  • Consider approving the Schreiber Trail Design at Wolf Creek for $55,000. This new section of trail will connect the Foley Antique Rose Trail to the west at North Poplar Street along Wolf Creek.
  • Discuss reappointing Kim Ward to the Foley Historical commission, reappointing Clyde Abrams, Robert Burkle and Charles Ebert III to the Public Facilities Cooperative District Board.
  • Discuss extending the contract with the Dream Center through Sept. 30 to coincide with the fiscal year for an additional $10,500.
  • Consider a resolution to approve a new sidewalk on East Azalea Avenue at Goodwill and paying James Brothers Excavating $31,277 for the materials and work.
  • Discuss new street lighting at the intersection of South Hickory and Orlando Drive for $819 at the entrance of the Pebble Creek Subdivision, new lighting at Acorn Drive and Fourth Avenue for $100 and upgraded lighting at County Road 65 and Airport Road.
  • Consider approving a change order for the generator project at the Community Development Department to buy an exhaust fan backup for $43,735.
  • Discuss awarding the bid for the fiscal year 2025 resurfacing project to Arrington Curb and Excavators for $1.3 million.
  • Consider adding guardrails to two areas in the Glen Lakes subdivision on Lakeview Drive and Clubhouse Drive for $44,000 to C&H Construction from Daphne.
  • Discuss making improvements to the Dyas Parking Lot for $75,000.
  • Hear a request to replace seats in council chambers changing from auditorium seating to individual chairs, bench seating and tables “to make better use of the space available.”
  • Discuss approving the Max Griffin Park upgrade project to replace the fencing on the larger softball field for $50,000.
  • Discuss approving design fees for the Fire Station No. 1 renovations for $9,500 for a new façade design and interior design. There is $250,000 budgeted for the project in FY 2025.
  • Consider a request to close streets in downtown for the Hometown Halloween celebration on Oct. 30.
  • Hear a request to transfer $18,000 to support an overseed of ryegrass for an event planned in October. The total for the project is $30,000.
  • Consider accepting a Federal Aviation Administration grant to construct a T-hangar at the airport. The grant amount is $137,000 with the city’s matching being $3,605.
  • Hear a request to waive fees for the Foley Civic Center for a campaign candidate forum.
