From Bingo to Ballads, Slithers to Summer Send Offs–The Coast Is Still Showing up and Showing Off!

Things to do on the Gulf Coast this week.

Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) —  If you thought just because we're halfway through August that these coastal towns might begin slowing down, think again! This week offers a bit of everything–from relaxed bingo and local tunes to sensational snakes, downtown adventures that impress and save, plus a nostalgic night under the stars with Goo Goo Dolls. Add waterfront dining, more live music, marina strolls, football, cook-offs, shopping, and a Sunday at Lulu’s, and it’s clear the coast didn't get the memo that summer is winding down. So, grab your calendar, your crew, and maybe some sunscreen (August is HOTT!) because plenty of fun is still making its way across the Alabama Gulf Coast.

Monday, August 17th-
Looking for something fun and engaging, but also a little relaxing for midday into early afternoon? Join others for a laid-back, slightly competitive free bingo afternoon at the tent stage at Flora-Bama this Monday, or any Monday through Friday from 1 to 4 PM.  This event encourages community spirit, friendly competition, prizes, and of course, lots of laughs. You can sit back with a cocktail in hand, enjoy a meal, or simply play a few rounds of bingo.  The Gulf Coast has plenty to offer to fill your day no matter what time it is. Good luck!

Tuesday, August 18th-
Live music, especially that of local talents, is a way of life here on the Alabama Gulf Coast, just as important and widespread as beach days, boat cruises, and the fisherman's way. That’s why, on any given Tuesday, even as schools are back in session and the seasons are preparing to change, you can still find raw and exceptional talent at some of the Gulf Coast's finest and local staple establishments, pretty much year-round. This Tuesday, after work, school, beach time, or however you’ve spent the extra sunny hours, pop on down to Tacky Jacks Fort Morgan, where the local vibes are always shining. This well-known name has three locations, all offering similar looks, menu items, and crowd favorites, while each provides something different from their waterside restaurants. This location is all about the locals, who are ready to greet you, meet you, and sing a tune with you, alongside guest artist Miss Rachael Lane from 6- 9 PM, whose sounds and personality are anything but ordinary. She’ll throw some twang, deep soul, and who knows what else at you, while you enjoy the company, the view, and some great food and drinks from the menu. Be sure to bring friends along for the Garbage Nachos — though tasty, you might find it hard to finish this big plate on your own. Check out the fried, grilled, and half-shell seafood options, along with plenty of beef and chicken as well. Don’t forget to take a walk down by the marina, check out the charters and fishing fleets, and browse the gift shops. Happy Tuesday from the Alabama Gulf Coast!

Things are getting a bit slithery at the Learning Campus at Gulf State Park this Wednesday with the Sensational Snakes event from 1 to 2 PM. To join in the exotic fun, all you need to do is turn up ready to learn, observe, and be sure to bring a camera for a special photo opportunity with the beautiful snake species that will be part of the one-day exhibit, all for free. Whether you're looking for something exciting you’ve never experienced before, you're a reptile enthusiast or lover, or someone who needs convincing that these creatures, in fact, play important roles in our ecosystems and beyond – this event is for you. During the visit, you'll get up close and personal with many of the native snakes of the park and enjoy some hands-on opportunities to learn why they are vital parts of our environment. After, be sure to do some exploring of different areas of the park; you can rent a bike or walk along the many nearby trails, and who knows – you might even spot a cousin of one of the sensational slithering snakes you just learned about on the way. These events are geared towards education, fun, and of course, some nature exploration. Happy trails, snails, and snakes to you.

There’s no farewell tour happening here just yet! The legendary Goo Goo Dolls are bringing their summer tour to The Wharf Amphitheater on Friday night, with special guest Neon Trees. For a band that has been making music since the mid-’80s, the Goo Goo Dolls have certainly earned their spot on the soundtracks of several generations. From “Name” to “Slide,” “Black Balloon,” and of course the unforgettable “Iris,” their catalog has a little something for both the longtime fan and the person who suddenly realizes, I know every word to this one. So while the Goo Goo Dolls aren’t bidding us farewell, we are getting very close to saying goodbye to another wonderful summer of concerts under the coastal sky at the Wharf. And honestly? That feels like a pretty great reason to soak up every last note.
