Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — Orange Beach will host the inaugural Habitat Hustle 5K and Fun Run this weekend. The race will benefit gopher tortoise conservation and research efforts at Gulf State Park. Participants can sign up for four race categories, starting at $15 for children. Educational booths will showcase efforts to protect the threatened species.

The event will take place at the Orange Beach Sportsplex on Saturday, April 11, 2026. Registration opens at 7:00 am and closes at 8:45 am. The 5K race and educational activities begin at 9:00 am.

Adult runners aged 19 and older can register for $35 in advance or $40 on race day. Student runners aged 18 and under pay $25 in advance or $30 on race day. A fun run for ages 11 and up costs $20, while a kids' fun run for ages 10 and under costs $15.

The 5K route starts at Orange Beach Sportsplex and goes through several trails. Runners will travel on Twin Bridges Trail, Catman Trail, Cross Park Trail, and Gulf Oak Ridge Trail. The fun run begins at 9:30 am.

Race organizers will award the top three finishers in each age category at 10:15 am. Categories include ages 10 and under, 11-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60+. The event concludes at 11:30 am.

Gopher tortoises are keystone species in Alabama and are considered a High Conservation Concern by state authorities. The burrows they dig provide shelter for more than 350 other wildlife species. Populations have declined by 80% over the last century due to habitat loss.

Gulf State Park supports a small gopher tortoise population and provides educational programs about the species. The tortoises thrive in Longleaf pine ecosystems with an open canopy and sandy soil. Conservation efforts include prescribed burns and habitat restoration to protect the threatened reptiles.

The race will take place rain or shine, according to event organizers. Day-of registration accepts cash, cards, and checks. Limited shirts will be available for purchase on race day for participants who want event merchandise.
