City of Gulf Shores Seeks Public Input on Playground Redesign

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (OBA) — Gulf Shores is asking its residents to help shape the future of one of its most treasured parks. The city has started a community-led project called Reimagine Kids Park. The goal is to rebuild the wooden playground at Johnnie Sims Park. The original structure has served families for 30 years, but officials say it has simply reached the end of its life.

The playground was originally built in 1996 through a community effort and in collaboration with the design firm Leathers & Associates. Despite ongoing maintenance, inspections, and repairs, the structure has reached the end of its usable life. Leathers & Associates will return to lead the redesign, which is scheduled to start this spring.

The city will host a family-friendly event called “Come Play with Us!” on Saturday, April 25, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the existing Kids Park in Johnnie Sims Park. The event aims to gather ideas from the people who matter most—the children and families who use the park.

Children will have the opportunity to sketch their dream playground at a drawing station during the event. Parents and other adults can complete a brief survey and share the features they want in the new design. The event will also feature music, face painting, games, snow cones, and cotton candy.

"This is truly a community-driven project," said Grant Brown, Director of Recreation & Cultural Affairs. "We want a park that reflects the creativity and needs of our families, and this event gives everyone an opportunity to share their ideas. The input we receive will play a major role in designing a space our children can enjoy for years to come."

Residents who cannot attend in person can participate online instead. The city has established a virtual town hall platform where people can fill out surveys, view design previews, and submit questions or comments. The platform is accessible at

Construction on the new playground is set to start in September. The city aims for a grand opening in November. The project is part of Gulf Shores' 2026 Capital Plan, which emphasizes the creation and enhancement of public spaces throughout the community.

City officials say the redesign aims to honor what residents loved about the original park while creating a safe and exciting space for a new generation. The goal is to preserve the character and charm of the old playground within a modern, imaginative environment.
