Summer heat meets cool cones on the Gulf Coast

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (OBA) — National Ice Cream Day, a celebration of one of America’s favorite desserts, brings a sweet seasonal tradition to the Alabama Gulf Coast, where locals and visitors alike indulge in cool treats to beat the heat. Observed annually on the third Sunday in July, this fun and flavorful holiday is more than a chance to enjoy a cone—it’s a meaningful way for communities to gather, support local businesses, and mark the height of summer together. This year National Ice Cream Day falls on July 20th.

The roots of this frosty observance date back to 1984, when President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and named the third Sunday as National Ice Cream Day. In his official proclamation, Reagan described ice cream as a “nutritious and wholesome food” enjoyed by over 90 percent of Americans and encouraged citizens to mark the occasion with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.” Four decades later, the tradition remains strong—particularly in warm-weather communities like the Alabama Gulf Coast.

National Ice Cream Day is also a chance to build community connection. With temperatures often reaching the 90s in mid-July, the timing couldn’t be better. Whether enjoyed indoors with family or outside by the Gulf breeze, a scoop of ice cream offers a refreshing way to pause and enjoy the day.

One standout stop for families celebrating National Ice Cream Day is
Yabba’s Wacky Snack Shack, with locations in both Foley and Gulf Shores. Known for its vibrant, retro-inspired decor and playful atmosphere, Yabba’s offers more than just ice cream—it’s an experience. The menu features an array of colorful, over-the-top treats, including classic soft-serve cones, snowballs, milkshakes, and their signature “Wacky Pack” sundaes loaded with toppings. With kid-friendly service, photo-worthy presentations, and seating that invites customers to linger, Yabba’s has quickly become a beloved spot for locals and tourists looking to cool down and indulge along Alabama’s coast.

Of course, along the Alabama coast, ice cream isn't limited to cones and sundaes. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the Bushwacker, the iconic frozen cocktail served at
Flora-Bama, where adults can toast the day with a creamy, rum-infused twist on dessert. Known as the “home of the Bushwacker,” Flora-Bama has turned this blended ice cream drink into a coastal tradition of its own. Whether you’re enjoying a scoop with the kids in Gulf Shores or sipping a Bushwacker with friends at the state line, National Ice Cream Day carries a different flavor along the coast—one that reflects both the region’s laid-back spirit and its deep sense of community.
