This year, National Ice Cream Day falls on July 19th.

The roots of this frosty observance trace back to 1984, when President Ronald Reagan designated July as National Ice Cream Month and named the third Sunday National Ice Cream Day. In his official proclamation, Reagan described ice cream as a “nutritious and wholesome food” enjoyed by more than 90 percent of Americans and encouraged citizens to mark the occasion with “appropriate ceremonies and activities.” Four decades later, the tradition remains strong—especially in warm-weather communities like the Alabama Gulf Coast.
