Gulf Shores Launches New Beginner Hiking And Camping Program

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (OBA) — Outdoor enthusiasts in South Baldwin County have a new reason to lace up their hiking boots this spring. The City of Gulf Shores Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department is launching a specialized program for beginners. This initiative aims to teach residents how to navigate the Great Outdoors safely and with confidence. It is specifically designed for those who want to move from casual walking to serious backpacking.

The program is divided into two distinct series to help participants gradually strengthen their skills. Series 1 starts with a classroom session on March 12th at the Cultural Center. This initial class focuses on Backpacking 201, covering essential gear and nutrition for the trail. On March 14th, the group will go to Gulf State Park for a two-hour guided trail hike.

Series 2 shifts the focus toward overnight adventures later in the month. A preparation class will be held on March 24th at the Cultural Center to discuss overnight camping needs. This leads to the final event: an overnight camping trip and hike. That excursion is scheduled for March 28th through March 29th at Blakely State Park.

Fitness Coordinator Holly Howell will oversee the Off the Beaten Path program sessions. She offers extensive expertise to help locals master basic camping and hiking skills. Participants will transition from the classroom to the outdoors to practice what they've learned. This practical approach ensures everyone feels prepared for their next adventure.

During the overnight portion, the program offers a campfire dinner and breakfast for all attendees. However, hikers must bring their own camping gear for the trip. This requirement helps beginners learn to manage their own equipment in a supervised setting. It is an excellent way to test out sleeping bags and tents before going solo.

The total cost for the program is $30 for Gulf Shores residents and $35 for non-residents. Registration is open for those who want to secure a spot in either series. Interested individuals can find more details or register by visiting the city website. The city also provides a phone line for specific questions about the curriculum.

Howell encourages anyone interested in the outdoors to join the group. The program is part of a larger effort to make use of the beautiful state parks in our area. Gulf State Park and Blakely State Park offer some of the best scenery in the region. These locations provide an ideal setting for learning how to survive and thrive on the trail.

The Cultural Center serves as the primary venue for the series' educational activities. Located at 19470 Oak Road West, it provides a convenient meeting place for residents. These classroom sessions are essential for learning the logistics of a successful backpacking trip. Knowing about nutrition and gear weight can determine the success of a long-distance hike.

Whether you are a seasoned walker or a complete beginner, this program provides something for everyone. The community-led hikes promote camaraderie among local outdoor enthusiasts. It is also a safe way to explore the woods with an experienced guide. Many residents have expressed interest in finding new ways to stay active this spring.

The City of Gulf Shores continues to emphasize recreation programs that showcase the natural environment. By teaching these skills, the city helps protect our parks by promoting Leave No Trace principles. Knowledgeable hikers are more likely to respect the land and adhere to safety guidelines. This program benefits both the participants and the local ecosystem.
