Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The City of Orange Beach kicked off its 2025 Baseball and Softball Season with a heartfelt tribute to longtime volunteer coach, David McLain. During the opening ceremony, Mayor Tony Kennon and the City Council surprised Coach McLain by dedicating Field 5 in his honor. Unaware of the plan, McLain read aloud the plaque's inscription at the center of Field 5, realizing the field now bears his name. He then threw the ceremonial first pitch, marking the official start of the season.

The signings highlight the exceptional talent nurtured in this coastal Alabama community.

Coach Shane Alexander credited the team's work ethic and the exceptional coaching staff, highlighting the contributions of assistant coaches Jody Hodo, Katelyn Boyd-Carson, Sarah Hadder, and David McLain . With most players returning next season, the Makos are already setting their sights on a fifth consecutive state title, aiming to continue their legacy of excellence in Alabama high school softball.

The Orange Beach High School softball team had a scare involving one of its star players during state tournament play in Oxford on May 13. A bad hop caught shortstop Daigle Wilson in the face and broke her nose and is causing swelling.
Wilson was on the field for about 30–45 minutes and was loaded on a board as a precaution since she suffered a head injury.

The Orange Beach High School Softball Team has caught the attention of several national polls this year. According to SBLive, a national sports news platform, the Makos are now the #1 team in the country. Another high school sports news outlet, MaxPreps has the team ranked in the Top 5 in the nation. Using any source, it is clear that the Makos Girls Softball is a national powerhouse.

The Orange Beach Makos Softball team's current record is an impressive 17-0 for the 2023-24 season, demonstrating their exceptional performance and dominance on the field. They've maintained a perfect winning streak, marking their journey with significant wins both at home and away. The team has outscored their opponents significantly with Kaylee Favors batting a .585 average. Daigle Wilson has stolen 30 bases and scored 34 runs. Ava Hodo puts the team over the top with a 26 RBI and a 1.2 slugging percentage.

The City of Orange Beach extends a warm invitation to its community members to attend the Opening Day of the 2024 Baseball and Softball season on Thursday, March 21st, at 5 p.m. at the Orange Beach Sportsplex. This year's event promises to be particularly memorable as it includes the dedication of Field 1 to the late Danny Martin, a dedicated public servant and pivotal figure in the development of the city's parks and recreational facilities. Martin, who passed away in August 2023, is celebrated for his over two decades of service to the community and his instrumental role in the creation and growth of the Orange Beach Sportsplex.

In a thrilling match-up on the softball field, the #7 nationally ranked Orange Beach Makos Girls Softball Team secured a significant victory against the #5 ranked Pace Patriots last night in a 4 to 2 win at home. Both teams have shown exceptional skill and competitive spirit coming into last night’s game.

Tonight, the Orange Beach Makos, currently ranked 7th nationally and 1st in Alabama Division 4A, are set to host the Pace Patriots from Florida, who are ranked 5th nationally and 1st in their district. Both teams have displayed exceptional performance early in the season. The Orange Beach Makos, have a 6-0 record, have shown a strong offense and defense, outscoring their opponents 56-7 in their games so far. The team's remarkable performance includes a significant win against Mobile Christian High School with a score of 9-1.

Leave it to the kids to lift up our community. From Hurricane Sally to softball-sized hail, we've been battered to say the least over the past eight months. All of that extra weight got much lighter thanks to a group of young, determined and resilient student-athletes who took the AHSAA 2A State Softball Championship tournament by storm this week. They are shining stars for our city.
