School Visits Spark Growing Passion For Sea Turtle Conservation
Program marks milestone with growing community impact

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — A longtime sea turtle education effort along Alabama’s Gulf Coast is inspiring a new generation of environmental stewards. Hundreds of young students are learning how to protect wildlife and care for beaches. The program is reaching more schools each year, and support from volunteers and donors continues to grow.
The effort is part of the 25th anniversary of the Share the Beach Turtle Preservation Program. This marks the fifth season that second graders in Baldwin County have received a special children’s book. More than 700 students recently received copies, bringing the total to more than 3,500 participants.
Linda B. Spangrud, a 20-year volunteer and author, leads the outreach. She visits schools with sponsors to discuss reading, conservation, and sea turtles. Students from Elberta, Foley, Florence Mathis, Swift, Magnolia, and Daphne elementary schools are participating.
Spangrud said she is encouraged by children’s responses. She often hears them remind others to clean up trash, fill beach holes, and use proper lighting. “It is working!” she said, noting the changes she sees firsthand.
The program also benefits from support beyond the local area. Winter visitors, often called snowbirds, have donated funds and shared the books with schools and libraries in other states, helping spread awareness far beyond the Gulf Coast.
Local sponsors play a major role in funding the books. Mayor Ralph Hellmich and his wife, Jo, along with Alabama Credit Union, support several schools. Other contributors include James Lipscomb & Sons, Centennial Bank, and CertaPro Painters.
Mayor Hellmich said the program helps students understand their environment. “I believe it is an educational tool for elementary students to assist them in becoming aware of our pristine environment and our turtle program,” he said.
Sabrina May of Alabama Credit Union said, “Alabama Credit Union was honored to participate in the event. It is wonderful seeing the children light up.” Doug Lipscomb added, “I hope to continue supporting education as long as I can.”
Spangrud has written four books in her Turtle People series, available in English and German. The books are sold on three continents and are available in Gulf Coast shops. She said she feels grateful for the continued support and believes teamwork can create a better future.
