Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — A boating safety course is being offered in Orange Beach to help residents and visitors stay safe on the water. The class is organized by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla in partnership with the City of Orange Beach. It aims to provide practical instruction for boaters of all experience levels. Participants will learn key safety skills and legal requirements for operating a boat.

The effort comes as National Safe Boating Week kicks off tomorrow, May 16th, and runs through May 22nd, 2026. The local class is scheduled for May 23rd, continuing the focus on boating safety and awareness just after the national campaign ends.

The class on May 23rd will be held at the Orange Beach Fire Department Station 1, at 25855 John M. Snook Drive, just off Highway 161, behind City Hall. The session will begin at 8:00 a.m. and is expected to end between 3:00 and 3:30 p.m.

The course uses materials from the National Association of Safe Boating Law Administrators, along with Alabama-specific information. Attendees will take a final quiz at the end of the class. Those who pass will receive a certificate meeting Alabama’s boating operator certification requirements.

Topics will include boat familiarization, trip planning, and safe boat operation. The class will also cover legal requirements, including life jackets, navigation lights, sound devices, and fire extinguishers. In addition, participants will learn how to respond to boating emergencies and safely enjoy water sports.

Additional instruction will focus on local waterways, law enforcement presence, and the Intracoastal Waterway. Attendees will also receive guidance on basic boating knots. If available, Orange Beach Marine Police will give a brief talk on safely navigating the area waters.

The cost to attend is $45, which covers course materials. Payment can be made in cash or by check at the class. Additional family members, first responders, and military personnel can attend for $25. Pizza will be provided for lunch during the session.

Minors are welcome but must be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. Those interested in attending are asked to register in advance by emailing
