Orange Beach Warns About Misuse Of Pickleball Courts
Officials say motorized devices have left scuffs and could cause lasting damage.
Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — Orange Beach officials are asking for help protecting the city’s new pickleball courts. Parks and Recreation staff reported recent misuse. The city says damage has already occurred. Police plan increased evening patrols.
According to Orange Beach Parks and Recreation, staff recently learned that e-bikes and e-scooters were used on the pickleball courts. The city said the activity caused significant scuffing and may have led to permanent damage.
Officials said tennis and pickleball court surfaces are delicate and not designed to withstand the wear and tear from motorized vehicles. The city said devices like e-bikes and e-scooters can damage the surface in ways normal play does not.
The city said it does not allow e-bikes, e-scooters, skateboards, or any non-pickleball equipment on the playing courts. Officials said the courts are intended for pickleball, not for riding or driving.
City officials asked anyone who sees someone misusing the pickleball or tennis courts to take action if it is safe to do so. If a person is not comfortable addressing the incident, the city advises calling the police instead.
The City of Orange Beach asked parents and guardians to remind kids who ride e-bikes or e-scooters that tennis and pickleball courts are not acceptable places to ride them. Officials said the goal is to prevent further damage.
Police will increase evening patrols to help deter future incidents, the city said. Officials thanked residents and visitors for helping protect the playing courts. Anyone can reach the Orange Beach Police Department's non-emergency line at 251-981-9777.
