Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Orange Beach will utilize a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to help develop a safety action plan in the city. The funds will come from the department’s Safe Streets and Roads for All grant program and will require a city match.

The Orange Beach City Council will discuss the grant during the work session portion of a joint regular/work session meeting on May 19 at 5 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall.

“The city will contribute $50,000 towards the development of the SAP and the

FHA will disperse the remaining funds to the City to carry out the scope of the project,” the resolution states. The federal government grant is for $200,000, for a total of $250,000 for the project.

Since the item comes up at the work session, it will not be put to a vote of the city council until the next regular meeting in June.

During the regular session, the council will discuss:

  • Paying $1.8 million for goods and services, May 7-20.
  • Designating the official name of Beach Boulevard East from East Beach Boulevard to avoid confusion among first responders with a street by the same name in Gulf Shores.
  • Awarding a bid for 300 barricades to Friedrich’s Custom Manufacturing for $48,750. Bids were opened on May 14. No bids were received for trailers to haul the barricades.
  • Awarding a bid for a pump for the Sewer Department from Hydra Service for $75,590 and a rehabilitation of the County Road 4 lift station for $307,303 from QR Contracting. Both bids were opened on May 14.
  • Appointing Tina D’Aversa to the board of adjustment and moving Grant Nichols to a supernumerary position.
  • A public hearing for a modification to the Buena Vista planned unit development to allow for the construction of a golf cart garage on Lot 72 in the resort. The luxury RV resort is located at the west end of Perdido Beach Boulevard.
  • A public hearing for a rezoning of the Moondance planned unit development to allow for the building of 16 finger docks on the existing pier off the east end of Bear Point.
  • A public hearing date for Margaritaville at The Wharf Landing to rezone 28 acres from general business to PUD to build 142 two- to five-bedroom homes in phase three of the development.
