Orange Beach Council To Review Federal Grant For Safety Action Plan
A $200,000 U.S. Department of Transportation grant, along with a city match, could support Orange Beach’s new safety action plan.
Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Orange Beach will utilize a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to help develop a safety action plan in the city. The funds will come from the department’s Safe Streets and Roads for All grant program and will require a city match.
The Orange Beach City Council will discuss the grant during the work session portion of a joint regular/work session meeting on May 19 at 5 p.m. in council chambers at City Hall.
“The city will contribute $50,000 towards the development of the SAP and the
FHA will disperse the remaining funds to the City to carry out the scope of the project,” the resolution states. The federal government grant is for $200,000, for a total of $250,000 for the project.
Since the item comes up at the work session, it will not be put to a vote of the city council until the next regular meeting in June.
During the regular session, the council will discuss:
- Paying $1.8 million for goods and services, May 7-20.
- Designating the official name of Beach Boulevard East from East Beach Boulevard to avoid confusion among first responders with a street by the same name in Gulf Shores.
- Awarding a bid for 300 barricades to Friedrich’s Custom Manufacturing for $48,750. Bids were opened on May 14. No bids were received for trailers to haul the barricades.
- Awarding a bid for a pump for the Sewer Department from Hydra Service for $75,590 and a rehabilitation of the County Road 4 lift station for $307,303 from QR Contracting. Both bids were opened on May 14.
- Appointing Tina D’Aversa to the board of adjustment and moving Grant Nichols to a supernumerary position.
- A public hearing for a modification to the Buena Vista planned unit development to allow for the construction of a golf cart garage on Lot 72 in the resort. The luxury RV resort is located at the west end of Perdido Beach Boulevard.
- A public hearing for a rezoning of the Moondance planned unit development to allow for the building of 16 finger docks on the existing pier off the east end of Bear Point.
- A public hearing date for Margaritaville at The Wharf Landing to rezone 28 acres from general business to PUD to build 142 two- to five-bedroom homes in phase three of the development.

During the work session, the council will also discuss:
- Appointments to the Construction Board of Appeals for the terms of Jon Townsend and Russ Hart, whose terms expire in June.
- Authorizing a grant agreement for $2,500 from the Alabama USA Semiquincentennial Commission for a city street party.
- A contract with McCollough Architecture for design services for an events pavilion at the Coastal Arts Center of Orange Beach for $12,800.
- Rescheduling a public hearing for a planned unit development for the Pirate’s Voyage Dinner Theater proposed for Beech’s Mobile Home Park and Campground. It was deferred until the June 16 council meeting.
- Setting a public hearing for Bubba’s Seaside Mini Golf to rezone three acres to planned unit development for a bumper car attraction. The planning commission gave the plan an 8-0 favorable recommendation at its May 11 meeting.
- Amending the city ordinance’s noise regulations.
