North Cedar Sidewalk Work Set to Start Monday in Foley
City effort aims to link more neighborhoods to the sidewalk network
Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — Crews will soon be back on North Cedar Street. Foley officials say the next stage of sidewalk construction is ready. Work will focus on the east side of the corridor. Residents along that stretch should expect some short-term impacts to access.
The city reports the second phase will begin Monday, Sept. 29. New sidewalks are planned on the east side between West Fern Avenue and West Peachtree Avenue. This stage follows earlier work along the same route. The city says the effort is part of a larger plan.
In 2024, crews extended sidewalks north on Cedar from Mel Roberts Park to West Fern. In 2023, Mills voters approved annexation into Foley, shaping future sidewalk links for that area. Those dates frame recent progress and the next steps ahead.
City staff describe the project as a push to connect more of Foley’s neighborhoods by foot. Part of this phase will carry the path north on Cedar to Peachtree Avenue. The goal appears simple but useful. Shorter walks and safer routes are the aim.
Construction crews will be laying pipe and building new segments. That work could temporarily block some driveways. Residents in the zone should plan for brief delays when crews are active. Patience may help things move smoothly.

The council has put money behind sidewalks, not just words. Foley approved one million dollars for new sidewalks in each of the last two budgets. That level of support is likely to keep projects moving as crews finish one segment and start another.
City planners are also looking west of North Cedar. Plans are underway to link the Mills Community to the city’s existing walkway network. That would give newer residents safer connections to parks, schools, and nearby services.
Officials have not detailed daily schedules for the North Cedar work. Residents along the east side between West Fern and West Peachtree should watch for signs and equipment staging. Crews will likely adjust as weather and site conditions change.
The city’s broader approach may feel slow at times. Still, block by block, the network grows. When this stretch opens, walkers will have a clearer, safer path along Cedar. That is the outcome the plan is aiming for.
Residents can expect more updates as the work proceeds. For now, the city is urging caution around crews and equipment. Please use care when entering or leaving driveways near the construction zone.
