Trail connects Rose Trail to North Pecan through restored land

New Greenway Planned Along Foley’s Wolf Creek

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — The City of Foley is moving ahead with plans to expand its pedestrian trail system by adding a new walking path along Wolf Creek. The project, known as the Schreiber Trail, would stretch between the Wilbourne Antique Rose Trail and North Poplar Street. It will follow the south bank of the creek through an area that has seen major restoration work recently. Once complete, the trail will offer residents and visitors another scenic route for walking and outdoor activities.

City officials say the trail will run about 2,000 feet from the Rose Trail just east of Alabama 59 to North Pecan Street. The Foley City Council approved the plan to move forward with designing the trail earlier this year. The path will be located in a section of land where the city restored the headwaters of Wolf Creek starting in 2011. This area had once been a straight drainage ditch but was transformed into a winding 80-foot-wide stream bed to better support local wildlife and water flow.

The trail project is named after Robert Schreiber, a former Foley City Council member. Leslie Gahagan, the city’s sustainability and natural resources director, said city staff have been discussing the trail plan for several years. The trail would link key parts of the city and highlight environmental improvements made along the creek. The area around Wolf Creek has grown more natural over time, with trees and other native plants taking root along its banks.

Councilman Charles Ebert III said the transformation of the creek has been a success. He noted that the trees planted during the restoration have grown well. With the trail in place, walkers will be able to enjoy the improved landscape up close. City leaders see this effort as part of ongoing work to enhance Foley’s green spaces for the future.
