New Baldwin County Shelter Helps Residents Keep Pets Safe During Disasters

Robertsdale, Ala. — (OBA) — Baldwin County residents will now have a safe place to bring their pets during severe weather emergencies, thanks to a new plan approved by county officials this week. The Baldwin County Commission has agreed to set up a pet-friendly emergency shelter, allowing people to seek safety with their companion animals when disasters strike. Developed by the Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and the Baldwin County Animal Shelter, this new measure is intended to protect the health and safety of both residents and their pets. The shelter will be especially important during hurricanes and other emergencies that require evacuation.


The plan was approved on August 5, 2025, during a meeting of the county commission. The shelter will be located at the Baldwin County Coliseum, at 19477 Fairground Road in Robertsdale. It will open as a last-resort option for families who need a safe place during declared disasters. Only domestic cats and dogs will be allowed at this facility, with a limit of two pets per household.


To be admitted, all cats and dogs must have up-to-date rabies and core vaccinations. Owners will need to bring their pets’ crates, food, water, and any necessary supplies. Each person is required to care for their own animals during their stay at the shelter. Pre-registration for the shelter will be available on-site when residents arrive.


Transportation for residents and their crated pets will be provided by the Baldwin Regional Area Transit System (BRATS). If people need a ride to the shelter during a declared evacuation, they can call 251-972-6817 to arrange for transport.


The shelter is not equipped to house exotic pets, livestock, or animals that might be considered dangerous or aggressive. The EMA encourages residents with horses or non-traditional pets to make other arrangements ahead of severe weather. To help the public stay informed, the EMA provides updates and weather alerts through their Alert Baldwin system and on several social media platforms. Residents are also encouraged to keep up-to-date with information from the National Weather Service and other emergency resources.
