A snapshot of what makes Gulf Coast living special—one event at a time

Things to do on the Gulf Coast this week.

Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — Each week along the Gulf Coast offers a blend of tradition, community, and discovery. Whether you gravitate toward local food, live music, outdoor adventure, or the creative arts, there’s no shortage of ways to connect with the coast and its people. This week’s lineup reflects the region’s diversity—gather for open-air art, explore the natural world, sample regional flavors, or simply unwind with friends and family by the water.

Events highlight both established local favorites and new experiences, welcoming residents and visitors alike to be a part of Gulf Coast life. There’s a steady rhythm to the calendar here: from the casual energy of live music at waterside venues to family-friendly celebrations, fitness classes, and community initiatives. No matter your interest, the coast serves up opportunities to learn, play, and relax—sometimes all in the same day.

For over two decades, Lucy Buffett, affectionately known as “Lulu,” has been sharing her grandmother’s culinary recipes by the waterside. What started as a modest outdoor burger and bait shop on Week’s Bay—where Buffett grew up fishing—has transformed into a multifaceted and highly regarded entertainment venue that is unique in its offerings at all locations. The opening of Lulu’s in Gulf Shores in 2003 marked the beginning of this extensive journey, characterized by a delightful combination of waterside leisure, live music, adventure through ropes courses, various recreational activities, and a culinary focus highlighted by her famous dish, “Gumbo Love.” This concept of sharing beloved family recipes has blossomed into a vibrant enterprise accessible to a wide audience. Lulu's operates daily and features live musical performances that enhance the coastal experience, making it an ideal spot to enjoy the sun or find shade, while children can engage in both unstructured and structured play. Conveniently located along the canal, Lulu’s also includes Lulu’s Homeport Marina, providing patrons with a comprehensive Gulf Coast atmosphere that combines both nautical and terrestrial experiences. The brightly colored architecture adds to the dynamic ambiance, keeping a perpetual summer-like feel. Additionally, the on-site gift shop offers a range of merchandise, further enriching the visitor experience. As part of the Beach Bands series, the venue will showcase The Destinations Monday night, starting at 6 PM.

“Leave Only Footprints” is a well-known phrase along the Gulf Coast, often associated with the beach or other public outdoor recreational areas. It serves as a reminder for people to be mindful of their impact on the environment and to navigate carefully around native plants and wildlife. This week's “Art al Fresco” event embraces that concept with a creative twist. For just $25, plus a $10 lunch card, participants—whether experienced artists or complete beginners—will be guided in creating their own custom-designed canvas using… their feet! Yes, that’s right—prepare for a fun and imaginative painting experience unlike any from the stroke of a paintbrush. The class begins at 11 AM, led by an instructor who will provide direction and encouragement for this free-range painting adventure. It's all about creativity, anything goes especially when it comes to using your toes! Be sure to arrive at least 15 minutes early to sign in and get settled, as walk-ins will not be accepted—pun intended! Reserve your spot today online or by calling the number below. Slithering, belly-crawlers, tree-climbers, and swimmers all deserve recognition, just like the rest of the animal kingdom. That’s why July 16th is celebrated as World Snake Day. People tend to have strong opinions about snakes; some love them, while others are fearful. Regardless of where you stand, it’s important to understand your feelings—whether it’s curiosity or fear—so you can better react if you encounter one in the wild or in your own environment. Experts have dedicated the hours from 10 AM to 12 PM to discuss the indigenous snake species of the Gulf Coast. During this time, you'll gain detailed insights into the anatomy, behavior, and ecological roles of these local slithering neighbors. Learning to identify and recognize their habits through guided discussions and presentations is crucial. The handlers at Gulf State Park refer to participants in this live interaction as "ambassadors," as they help pave the way for greater awareness and understanding of these creatures. Prepare for a series of educational activities that include species identification games and hands-on crafts, appealing to both novices and seasoned herpetologists. So, whether you're looking to expand your knowledge or have a longstanding passion for snakes, this free and exciting event is one you won't want to miss.
