Orange Beach Schools Surpass State Proficiency Averages

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Orange Beach City Schools has climbed to the top of Alabama's academic rankings in less than two years. The Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program (ACAP) results and rankings from the Education Lab of AL.com highlight the district's progress.

For the 2023-2024 school year, Orange Beach City Schools secured the following state proficiency rankings:

  • 3rd in Mathematics
  • 3rd in Science
  • 7th in English Language Arts (ELA)

Superintendent Randy Wilkes expressed pride in these accomplishments, attributing the success to the hard work of students, staff, and administrators. Wilkes noted, "When we established this school system, our goal was to break into the state’s top ten within four years. To say that the Mako family has surpassed this goal is an understatement!".

The district's average proficiency scores are significantly above the state average: 23 points higher in ELA, 34 points higher in Mathematics, and 33 points higher in Science. Over the past year, proficiency improved by seven points in ELA, four points in Math, and an impressive 16 points in Science.

Wilkes also outlined a strategic plan aiming for each grade level to achieve at least 80% proficiency in all tested subjects over the next five years. Currently, seven groups have already surpassed this mark, demonstrating the district's ongoing commitment to academic excellence.
