Gulf Shores, Ala. — (OBA) — A major road extension project along Waterway East Boulevard is nearing completion after two construction phases. The project creates new connections to the Alabama Beaches Parkway, also known as SR-161. A RESTORE grant funds the entire project, covering all construction costs. Both completed phases have laid the groundwork for improved traffic flow in the area.

The connection between Waterway East Boulevard and SR-161 is already complete. Crews are expected to finish planned intersection upgrades on E. 29th Avenue within the next week or two. Afterward, work will shift to the Commerce Street connection. Officials anticipate the roadway will be fully open by the end of the year.

The project unfolded in two distinct phases, both now complete. Phase 1 extended the roadway from E. 2nd Street to the edge of ALDOT's right-of-way for the new SR-161 road and bridge. Phase 2 connected Waterway East to Alabama Beaches Parkway (SR-161 SB) north of the new bridge.

Once the Commerce Street work is complete, crews will resurface all three roads, finish striping, and open the entire stretch.

The extension will improve traffic flow and enhance connectivity for residents and visitors traveling through the area. The RESTORE grant covers all construction costs.
