Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is changing red snapper fishing rules for the rest of 2025, giving anglers more options along the Gulf Coast. Starting August 29, fishing for red snapper will be allowed every day of the week. This change is effective immediately, and fishing will remain open daily until Alabama’s private angler quota—664,552 pounds—is reached. Officials say the season has already been productive so far, with more than 443,000 pounds of snapper harvested by August 24, 2025.

Anglers have extra openings to fish through the fall and will be notified when the quota is close to being met, prompting a season closure. Alabama’s red snapper rules apply to people fishing from the shore, private recreational boats, and commercial party vessels licensed by the state in both state and federal waters not holding federal for-hire permits. The department uses the Snapper Check system to track how many fish are caught each week, ensuring both conservation and enjoyment of the fishery.
