Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Orange Beach City Schools, under the leadership of Superintendent Randy Wilkes, has achieved impressive milestones, reflecting both a dedicated community and visionary guidance at every level. In a short period, the school system has reached notable excellence in both academics and athletics, emphasizing the role of strong leadership and the right people in the right positions.

Drawing on the principles outlined by Jim Collins in "Good to Great," Wilkes credits the success to having the right people in the right seats on the bus—a vision that is reinforced by high expectations for attendance, rigor, and accountability.

The foundation of these achievements lies in an unwavering commitment to continuous improvement, not only through teacher professional development but also through an ingrained work ethic that values consistency and effort. As Wilkes points out, talent may open doors, but relentless effort and dedication keep them open. The Orange Beach Board of Education has played a key role by prioritizing low student-to-teacher ratios (13:1), introducing staff incentives, and maintaining a strategic, fiscally responsible approach to education.

The system’s recent accolades reflect these combined efforts. For 2024, the district earned impressive report card scores: Orange Beach Elementary School (OBES) scored 97, Orange Beach Middle & High School (OBMHS) scored 94, and Orange Beach City Schools (OBCS) scored 95, with each showing improvement over the previous year. The Class of 2024 boasts a 100% graduation rate. In academics, Orange Beach City Schools stood out as the only school system in Alabama with every third-grader reading at or above grade level.

Athletic accomplishments have also been remarkable. In 2024, the Girls Softball Team was named Max Prep National Champion after winning its fourth consecutive state title, and the Cheerleading Squad claimed its first-ever State Championship. These achievements underscore the commitment and hard work of students, staff, and the community, positioning Orange Beach City Schools for sustained growth and success in the future.

Orange Beach City Schools recently received a $182,000 Lt. Governor’s grant, bringing the total to approximately $5.8 million in funding for various projects.

Below are highlights from the Superintendent highlighting the successes achieved by the Orange Beach City Schools in its short history.

Orange Beach City Schools’ achievements reflect a dedicated community and visionary leadership at every level. The school system is fortunate to have achieved excellence in academics and athletics in such a short period.

Five Keys

  1. The foundation of this success lies in its people. As Jim Collins notes in Good to Great, vision alone is not enough—it only matters if you have the right people in the right seats on the bus.
  2. High expectations for attendance, rigor, and accountability form the bedrock of this success, but these efforts are continuous and ever-evolving.
  3. While teacher professional development is still in its early stages, the staff’s dedication to growth and excellence is evident.
  4. Work ethic has no substitute. Talent may open doors, but relentless effort and commitment keep them open. Success stems from showing up, staying committed, and consistently giving your best—even when no one is watching.
  5. Orange Beach has a devoted Board of Education consistently strives to enhance the city’s K4-12 education system. The board has implemented staff incentives, maintained low student-to-teacher ratios (13:1), developed policies aligned with the system’s strategic plan, and ensured a fiscally responsible organization.

These combined efforts position Orange Beach City Schools for sustained growth and achievement.
