Gulf Shores Planning Commission to Weigh Brights Creek at Tonight’s Meeting

City memo cites street work lapses, hydrant misuse, and trees
Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – A new subdivision planned for Oak Road West in Gulf Shores is under scrutiny from city staff as it seeks an extension of a preliminary plat approval. The Village of Brights Creek is located west of the Gulf Shores Sportsplex and developers hope to put 76 homes on the 43.85-acre parcel. City staff is expected to recommend denying the extension because of noncompliance with street construction standards required by the city.
The Gulf Shores Planning Commission will meet at 4 p.m. on Sept. 23 in council chambers at city hall.
Other problems with the subdivision included improper use of water from fire hydrants for irrigation, according to a memo on the meeting agenda.
“Additionally, the developer has failed on numerous occasions to provide environmental protection controls, best management practices and removed protected trees,” the memo from Planner Andy Bauer states.
During the meeting, the commission will also discuss:
- A request for a planned unit development for Oyster Pointe on 64.4 acres at 17344 Oyster Bay Road. Developers want to develop a cottage subdivision and restaurant on the site that currently has one house on it and about 40 acres in wooded wetlands. Staff will recommend approval with conditions.
- A request to approve a 3,120-square-foot office building east of the Gulf Shores Museum. Staff will recommend approval with conditions.
- Two items that were deferred to a future meeting on Edwin Oaks Subdivision and a zoning ordinance text amendment regarding tattoo parlors and body piercing studios.
