Gulf Shores City Schools Named Apple Distinguished School District

Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – In a press release from Superintendent Dr. Matt Akin, he stated the Gulf Shores City Schools is proud to announce its designation as an Apple Distinguished School District, a prestigious recognition awarded by Apple, Inc., for leadership in creating technology-rich learning environments that inspire creativity, foster collaboration, and personalize learning. The award was presented on Thursday, January 30, at 9:00 a.m. in the Hangout Music Production Lab at Gulf Shores High School.


Following the announcement, attendees had the opportunity to tour classrooms and experience firsthand the innovative practices that earned this distinction.


This honor reflects Gulf Shores City Schools’ commitment to integrating cutting-edge technology into aspects of teaching and learning. From elementary classrooms to high school programs, Apple technology plays a pivotal role in empowering students and teachers to connect with the world, spark creativity, and achieve academic excellence.


Superintendent Dr. Matt Akin highlighted the district’s transformative use of Apple products, stating:


"At Gulf Shores City Schools, Apple technology helps us connect students to the world in ways that fuel their creativity, deepen collaboration, and make learning personal. From building electric cars and producing music to multimedia storytelling and augmented reality experiences, our teachers and students leverage these tools to unlock their full potential and thrive in a global, digital age."


As part of its innovation journey, Gulf Shores City Schools has implemented numerous forward-thinking initiatives, such as:


  • Music production lab at the high school, where students create professional-grade audio and video projects.
  • Aviation Academy that begins with flight simulators in elementary school and concludes with building airplanes and offering pilot certification in high school.
  • Coding and Robotics Programs beginning in elementary school, giving students hands-on experience with problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Interactive Science Labs utilizing iPads and laptops to measure and analyze water quality from local waterways and to help identify plant and insect species from Gulf State Park.
  • Personalized Learning Platforms powered by Apple tools that allow students to set goals, track progress, and engage with content tailored to their unique needs.

Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — An Orange Beach man drowned in south Alabama Sunday afternoon, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Dewayne Stephens, 55, of Orange Beach, was identified as the man who lost his life.
City of Foley Firefighters Praised for High Performance

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — Fire protection in Foley has gotten better over the past few years, even though firefighters are answering more calls than before. A national study showed that the city's fire service has improved. Mayor Ralph Hellmich said the higher score proves Foley’s firefighters are doing a great job under growing pressure. He credited Chief Joey Darby and the entire department for their work in keeping the community safe.
Full Moon Paddle Returns to Orange Beach Friday

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — The Foley Police Department is investigating a burglary that happened overnight at the Tanger Outlet Mall. An employee at Zales Outlet called the police around 8:30 a.m. Monday. They reported that jewelry had been stolen during the night. The value of the stolen items has not been released.
Mini Golf Planned for Bubba’s Seafood House Property

Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — A group of four people is planning a new mini-golf course at the site of longtime Bubba’s Seafood House on beach road. John Pilcher, Jody Pilcher, Mary Pilcher and Emmie Pilcher Flowers are making the request. According to Baldwin County tax records, the group owns six parcels fronting the road east of Fat Daddy’s. They will request changes to a previously submitted site plan.
