New Walkways to Boost Foley Pedestrian Connectivity

Foley Sidewalks Approved

Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – Four new sidewalk projects will help connect walkways through Foley and improve pedestrian connectivity.

The projects will provide improved access to Foley High School, Mathis Elementary School, Foley Elementary School and Alabama 59.

The City Council voted on Monday, April 15 to approve funding for the projects.

Wayne Dyess, Foley executive director for infrastructure and development, said the projects will help link sidewalks around the city.

“We have existing sidewalks that are unconnected,” Dyess said., “These projects will then connect these, building a complete network, so we're getting more bang for our buck.”

The Foley Elementary sidewalk would extend along North Cedar Street in front of the campus. The Foley High walkway would be built on South Pine Street near Pride Drive.

The Mathis sidewalk would be constructed along South Cedar Street and join with walkways already built on Ninth Avenue to provide pedestrian access to Hickory Street.

The Alabama 59 walkway would be on the east side of the highway extending south from East Verbena Avenue. That sidewalk will connect the walkway that ends at the Portabella’s restaurant and extend the route south.

Upcoming plans call for extending the sidewalk on Alabama 59 south to Azalea Avenue.

The projects are part of a program approved by the Foley City Council that will provide $1 million to build new sidewalks around the city in the current fiscal year.

Additional projects are planned in the Mills community and throughout Foley.
