Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – The City of Gulf Shores has announced the creation of its Junior City Council Program, a new initiative designed to provide local high school students with leadership development opportunities. This program will introduce students to the workings of municipal government, helping them build leadership skills while actively engaging with their community. Applications are currently being accepted until September 25th for students in grades 10-12 who reside within the city limits of Gulf Shores.

The Junior City Council will comprise up to 15 students in grades 10-12 who reside within the city limits. The program will run from October to May, featuring monthly meetings, guest speakers, and community projects. Participants will also attend City Council meetings and contribute to initiatives that benefit the community.

Dr. Stephanie Harrison, Assistant Superintendent of Gulf Shores City Schools, expressed her support for the program. "The Junior City Council aligns perfectly with our mission to develop well-rounded students who are engaged citizens. This hands-on experience in government and community service will complement their academic education and prepare them for active roles in shaping our city's future."

The program seeks students with demonstrated leadership potential, strong communication skills, and a commitment to community service. Applications will be accepted from September 9-25, with finalists selected for in-person interviews.

"This is a fantastic opportunity for students to gain a deeper understanding of how city government works and make a real impact in their city," said Lindsey Hart, Public Engagement Manager. "We encourage all eligible students to apply for this experience that will equip them with invaluable skills in leadership and community engagement."
