Fourth Annual Island Schools Special Olympics Set For Orange Beach
Community invited to attend free event at Mako Stadium
Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — The Fourth Annual Island Schools Special Olympics is scheduled to take place at the Orange Beach Middle and High School campus. The event will be held at the new Mako Stadium and Athletic Complex. Organizers say it will bring together students, families, educators, and volunteers. The event focuses on inclusion and on celebrating student achievement through competition.
The event is planned for April 29, 2025. Gates will open at 8:45 a.m., and the closing medal ceremony is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend and support the athletes.

Student-athletes with disabilities from Gulf Shores City Schools and Orange Beach City Schools are set to participate in various track and field events. According to organizers, every activity is structured to foster confidence, showcase individual strengths, and acknowledge personal achievements.
The event has become a tradition for both school systems. The districts alternate hosting each year. School leaders say the approach allows students to experience different environments while strengthening ties between the two communities.
“This event truly represents the heart of our Island Schools communities,” said Kylie Burleson, Director of Special Services for Orange Beach City Schools. “It's a powerful reminder of the importance of inclusion and the belief that every student deserves the opportunity to participate, succeed, and be celebrated.”
The event will begin with an opening ceremony featuring a Torch Run. Emergency responders from Gulf Shores and Orange Beach are expected to participate. Organizers say the day will include competitions, sportsmanship and moments that highlight determination.
At the end of the event, each athlete will receive a custom medal donated by 16 Creative. Lunch will be provided by Vinny’s Pizzeria, and beverages will be donated by Buffalo Rock. Officials say community support helps foster a strong, encouraging atmosphere for participants.
