Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Today’s a day for beach lovers as we celebrate National Beach Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the sandy shores that offer recreation and relaxation to millions. This is not only a day to celebrate our beautiful beaches but to remember the importance of keeping our beaches clean and litter free. 

The origins of National Beach Day can be traced back to 1929 when the Knights of Columbus launched it as part of their convention plans. However, it was in 2014 that Colleen Paige, a pet and family lifestyle expert, revitalized National Beach Day to focus on the importance of beach cleanliness.

It is also a day to keep beach safety in mind. 

• Swim with a lifeguard present and only in designated areas.
• Never swim alone; always go with a buddy.
• Always have a flotation device with you when you enter the Gulf of Mexico.
• Be cautious of currents, moving water, and riptides.
• Know your capabilities and swim within them.
• Consider taking swimming lessons and learning CPR.

We may be bias, but we believe that our little stretch of beach is home to some of the most beautiful beaches found anywhere. From Fort Morgan to Perdido Key, our beaches are not just tourist attractions but also vital parts of the local ecosystem. 

Today should also serve as a reminder to participate in beach clean-up activities and adhere to beach rules to ensure these natural resources are preserved. In our area, the Alabama Coastal Clean-Up in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores takes place on Saturday, Sept. 16th from 8am-12pm. This is a good time for residents and visitors to come together to clean their favorite beaches.
