So you have the presents wrapped, the car packed, and your gas tank is full and now you have to face the traffic on one of Alabama's highways. The Department of Transportation would like for your trip to go smoothly and have good traffic flowing during the holidays.

 All temporary lane closures on interstate routes will be suspended during the Christmas and New Year holiday travel period. The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) will halt closures from December 23 at noon until midnight on Jan. 2, 2026.

With higher traffic volumes inevitable, Drive Safe Alabama coordinator Dalton Middleton said the state is aiming at reducing crashes this year.

“In 2024, eight people died in crashes during the Christmas holiday while eight more died during the New Year holiday,” said Middleton. “By suspending lane closures, we are committed to making safety a top priority and hope to make everyone’s journey safer.”

Travel times can be reduced if drivers plan ahead and stay alert, ALDOT added.

ALDOT provided the following travel tips:

· Avoid Distractions: Drivers should keep their eyes and minds on the road and avoid cell phone use while driving.

· Observe Speed Limits: Speeding is the number one contributor to fatal crashes in Alabama. It reduces reaction time and increases the severity of crashes.

· Buckle Up: Seat belts save lives and reduce the risk of serious injury in the event of a crash. Ensure that everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seat belt properly.
