Gulf Shores, Ala. — (OBA) — Alabama officials are seeking public input on a new management plan for the state's shrimp fishery. The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will hold two listening sessions in November to gather feedback from industry participants and residents. The Marine Resources Division is developing the plan as part of an external certification process. The certification aims to demonstrate that Alabama's shrimp resources are managed sustainably.

ADCNR Commissioner Chris Blankenship explained the importance of the new management plan. He said the shrimp fishery is going through a certification process to prove sustainable management practices. The new plan is required for that certification to be completed. Blankenship emphasized that input from Alabama's shrimping industry is critical to the process.

If the plan is adopted, it will guide how the state manages its shrimp fishery going forward. Marine Resources Division staff will present proposed goals and objectives during each session. Attendees will have multiple opportunities to comment on the proposals throughout each event. Participants can also suggest additional goals and objectives for the plan.

The listening sessions are open to anyone involved in Alabama's shrimping industry. Members of the public are also encouraged to attend and share their perspectives. The department wants to ensure all voices are heard before finalizing the management plan.
