Watch The Fleet Head Offshore Before The Big Blue Marlin Classic Kicks Off
The annual tournament features free admission, big catches, and a quarter million dollars raised for St. Jude
Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — One of the Gulf Coast's biggest fishing tournaments is back. The Big Blue Marlin Classic, known as "The Greatest Show in Sportfishing," returns to The Wharf this week. The event draws top anglers from across the country and raises money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
The main event runs July 17 and 18, with action starting Thursday, July 16. The shotgun start takes place at noon, just south of Perdido Pass. People who enjoy looking at big boats should head to Perdido Pass Park around 10 a.m. to watch the parade of big boats heading out to prepare for the shotgun start.
Watching those boats leave the pass is a beautiful sight. Dozens of large sportfishing vessels line up and motor out to the Gulf. The scene draws crowds every year and is free to watch. It's one of the most memorable moments of the summer on the Gulf Coast.
Once the fleet heads out, the competition heats up. The Big Blue Marlin Classic is the final leg of the Gulf Coast Triple Crown Series, raising the stakes even higher. Anglers will chase big blue marlin and other offshore species. The weigh-ins are where the real drama unfolds.
The weigh-in schedule offers fans several opportunities to see the catch. On Friday, July 17, an Early Bird Weigh-In will be held at 7 a.m., if needed. The main Friday weigh-in will follow at 5 p.m. at The Wharf Marina on Marlin Circle.
The grand finale is Saturday, July 18, with the Final Weigh-In at 5 p.m., when the tournament champion will be crowned. All weigh-in events will be held at The Wharf Marina on Marlin Circle. It's the moment every angler and fan has been waiting for all week.
Beyond the fishing, the Big Blue Marlin Classic has a big heart. To date, the tournament has raised more than a quarter of a million dollars for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. That spirit of giving is woven into every part of the event.
Fans can even take part in the St. Jude Fighting Chair Challenge. The challenge puts participants in a real sportfishing chair for a tug-of-war competition. All proceeds benefit St. Jude's kids. It's a fun, hands-on way to make a difference.
Marine dealers and vendors will also be set up at the event. Fans can browse gear, talk to experts, and soak up the atmosphere. Admission and parking are free. That makes this one of the best deals of the summer.
The Big Blue Marlin Classic is more than a fishing tournament. It brings together top-level competition, a love for the community, and a commitment to helping sick children. Whether fans arrive at Perdido Pass on Thursday morning or on Saturday for the final weigh-in, this event is worth the trip.
