Summer Begins on the Gulf Coast with Events and Sunshine

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – While it may seem like summer’s been around for a couple of months already, today is actually the first day of summer. Today and tomorrow will be the longest days of the year, with the most sunlight of the year. Both days will see a sunrise at 5:45 AM, Sunset at 7:56pm giving us approximately 14 hours and 11 minutes of daylight. That’s just over 4 hours more sunlight today than on our shortest day of the year, which is December 21st.

This year the summer solstice occurs on June 20th at 9:51pm CDT.

The Gulf Coast, known for its beautiful beaches and vibrant communities, offers various activities planned to celebrate the arrival of summer. Locals and tourists are already out enjoying the beaches, fishing trips, and water sports. Local businesses are gearing up for the influx of summer visitors.

There are several events organized to mark the first day of summer. The Wharf in Orange Beach will host its Red, White + Wharf events throughout the summer, featuring various entertainment options each night.

This year the
Make Music Day, which normally takes place on the first day of summer, will take place on Friday in Gulf Shores. The festival includes live music, food trucks, and local artisans showcasing their crafts at Meyer Park. It’s a family-friendly event that offers something for everyone.

For those looking to enjoy the natural beauty of the area, Gulf State Park offers hiking and biking trails, as well as opportunities for bird watching and picnicking. The park’s beaches are a perfect spot for swimming and sunbathing. Although, this year the double red flags are flying along the gulf, meaning the gulf is closed to swimmers. Please stay out of the gulf during this time. Swim in the lakes, back bays or pools until the gulf calms.

Residents and visitors alike are reminded to stay hydrated and apply sunscreen regularly when spending the day out in the sun, as temperatures are expected to rise.

The start of summer also means the beginning of the peak tourist season. Local hotels, condos, restaurants, and shops are prepared to welcome visitors with their typical southern hospitality. The community’s efforts to provide a welcoming atmosphere contribute to the Gulf Coast’s reputation as a top summer destination.
