Shrimp Season Begins In Coastal Alabama Waters
Marine Resources Division outlines rules for inside waters reopening
Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources has announced the opening of shrimping season in state waters. The change allows shrimp harvesting in several coastal areas. Officials said the opening complies with state law and established regulations. The announcement applies to inside waters that are not permanently closed.
According to the Marine Resources Division, the season will begin at 6 a.m. on Monday, June 1, 2026. The opening complies with Section 9-12-46 of the Code of Alabama and Rule 220-3-.01. These rules govern when and where shrimping is allowed each year.
Waters included in the opening are Mobile Bay, Bon Secour Bay, Mississippi Sound, Perdido Bay, Arnica Bay, Wolf Bay, and Little Lagoon. These waters are popular for both commercial and recreational shrimping along the Alabama coast.
Officials said only waters not permanently closed by law or regulation will be open to harvesting. Areas with long-standing protections will remain off limits. The goal is to balance access with the conservation of marine resources.
The Marine Resources Division manages shrimping seasons and enforces regulations throughout Alabama waters. The division is part of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and supports both the seafood industry and environmental protection efforts.
The department oversees several divisions, including Marine Resources, State Lands, State Parks, and Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries. These divisions manage and protect natural resources statewide. Officials encourage responsible use to help maintain healthy ecosystems.
