New Lights Improve Safety at Key Foley Intersection
Foley plans more safety features at County 65 and Airport Road

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — Foley is making its streets safer by upgrading lighting at several key intersections. The city recently began installing new lights at the intersection of Baldwin County 65 and Airport Road, which it acquired from Baldwin County in June. City officials say the improvements are part of a plan to make roads safer for both drivers and pedestrians. Residents have already noticed a difference since the new lights were put in place.
The Foley City Council approved the lighting upgrades earlier this month. Mayor Ralph Hellmich said two lights have already been installed at the County 65 and Airport Road intersection, with plans to add two more soon. After the city took over the site in June, officials also lowered the speed limit on this section of County 65 to help keep drivers safe.
Mayor Hellmich said residents have reacted positively to the brighter intersection. He explained that people are happy with the changes and believe the extra lighting has made the area safer. The city is not stopping with just lights. Plans are in place to add a four-way stop at the intersection, along with rumble strips to warn drivers to slow down. The new stop signs will also feature solar-powered lights to make them more visible.
Hellmich explained that many people have driven through this area for years without needing to stop, so the city wants to make sure everyone is prepared for the new traffic pattern. In addition to lighting and stop signs, Foley will extend sidewalks from the Mills Community on the west side to connect with walkways on the east side of the intersection. A crosswalk will be added once the sidewalk project is finished.
The Foley City Council also voted to install new street lights at the intersection of South Hinckley Street and Orlando. Improvements are also planned for the street lights at Acorn Drive and Fourth Avenue. City leaders say these changes are all part of ongoing efforts to make Foley a safer place for everyone who lives and travels in the area.
