Twelve recruits earn badges after rigorous training

Orange Beach Firefighter Class of 2024

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Twelve new firefighters have officially joined the ranks of South Alabama fire departments following the Orange Beach Fire Rescue Recruit Class 24-01 graduation ceremony on Friday, December 13, 2024. The ceremony, held at the Orange Beach Performing Arts Center, marked the culmination of three months of intensive training and certification, with recruits now serving in departments across Orange Beach, Spanish Fort, Gulf Shores, and Theodore Dawes.


The young men took to the stage as recruits and stepped down as sworn firefighters, with eight representing Orange Beach Fire Rescue, two with Spanish Fort Fire Rescue, one with Gulf Shores Fire Rescue, and one with Theodore Dawes Fire Rescue. 


After three months of training, the class fulfilled all the requirements set forth by the Alabama Fire College and Personnel Standards Commission.


The ceremony included the badge pinning by the graduates’ family members and loved ones; a certificate ceremony led by Training Officer Austin Lesinger; and the oath of office given by Orange Beach Fire Chief Jeff Smith. Pastor Chad Stafford of Coastal Church gave the graduation address.

  • Gabriel “Gabe” Morin (Gulf Shores Fire Rescue)
  • Cecil Murphy (Orange Beach Fire Rescue)
  • Dariusz Tumilowicz (Orange Beach Fire Rescue)


Director's Award

The Director’s Award for Academic Excellence was earned by Eric Freedman, and Recruit Class 24-01 chose Tres Cozine for the Leadership Award.


Training officers were Austin Lesinger and Alissa Jacques. Training Division instructors included Orange Beach Fire Medic Jordan Flynt, Orange Beach Fire Engineer Chad Hartley, Orange Beach Fire Medic Zachery Lavender, Gulf Shores Fire Lt. Michael Lucas, and Orange Beach Fire Medic James McMurray. 


The city wishes each new firefighter the best of luck as they enter into the fire service to serve the citizens of Theodore, Gulf Shores, Spanish Fort and Orange Beach.

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Sea turtle nesting season has officially begun along Alabama’s Gulf Coast, marking a critical time for conservation efforts. From May 1 through October 31, endangered sea turtles—including loggerheads, green sea turtles, and Kemp’s Ridleys—return to the beaches of Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, and Fort Morgan to lay their eggs. This ancient ritual is vital for the survival of these species, which are protected under the Endangered Species Act. Local volunteers and organizations are mobilizing to ensure the safety of both nesting turtles and their hatchlings.

Fish River, Ala. – (OBA) – The Bay Watch Boat Ramp in Baldwin County will close on May 5 for parking area improvements, according to the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR). The work should be finished by early August, weather permitting.
Baldwin County Among a Dozen Counties in Alabama Facing Burn Ban

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) is reminding residents that a seasonal burn ban starts today, May 1st. It will continue through the end of October. The ban is aimed at protecting the air during the warmer months. Baldwin County is one of 12 counties in Alabama included in the ban.

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – NOAA Fisheries is using advanced technology and artificial intelligence to gather better data on red snapper and reef fish in the Gulf of Mexico, according to a report from NOAA Fisheries on April 15, 2025. In February, NOAA tested new equipment aboard a research vessel. This technology combines video and acoustic cameras, echosounders, and artificial intelligence to estimate red snapper abundance even in poor visibility conditions.
Orange Beach to Observe National Day of Prayer Thursday

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Residents and visitors are invited to join in a special event honoring the National Day of Prayer. The event will take place at the Coastal Arts Center in Orange Beach under the tent near Wolf Bay. Several local church pastors will lead prayers during the gathering.
Baldwin County Probate and Revenue Offices in Robertsdale to Close for Renovation

Robertsdale, Ala. – (OBA) – The Baldwin County Probate and Revenue Offices at the Central Annex in Robertsdale will close temporarily for renovations. The closure begins May 1, 2025. Renovations are expected to take around ten months to complete. The goal is to upgrade the facility and improve services.

Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – A decorated urn containing human ashes washed up on Gulf Shores beach this past week, starting a mystery that local police have now solved. The container was discovered by people walking along the shore on West Beach on April 17.
Orange Beach’s Trailhead Challenge Encourages May Hikes

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Orange Beach Parks and Recreation is inviting the community to take part in its State Park Trailhead Challenge. The event encourages outdoor activity and exploration. Participants will complete four designated walking routes for a total of 15 miles. The program highlights trails on the east side of Gulf State Park.
