Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) —  Sea turtle nesting season is set to begin along the northern Gulf Coast, including Alabama, Florida, and Mississippi. The annual event brings threatened sea turtles ashore to lay eggs. Officials say public awareness is key to protecting the endangered animal and urge beachgoers to follow simple steps.

The official sea turtle nesting season begins this Friday, May 1, and runs through October 31. Area beaches host nesting loggerhead, Kemp's ridleys, and green sea turtles, all of which are classified as endangered. The survival of these turtles depends on safe, undisturbed shorelines. Conservation efforts focus on minimizing human impact.

Experts say beaches should be kept clean, dark, and flat throughout the season. Artificial lighting can disorient hatchlings as they head toward the water. Obstacles left on the sand can block or trap turtles. Flattened sand helps nesting turtles and young hatchlings move safely.

To reduce risks to sea turtles, several steps are recommended. Lights visible from the beach should be turned off or shielded after 9 p.m. Beach equipment, such as chairs, tents, and toys, should be removed by sunset. Filling in holes and flattening sandcastles can prevent turtles from becoming trapped.

Officials also remind the public to keep a safe distance from turtles and nests. Flash photography is strictly prohibited around nesting turtles or hatchlings. Anyone who sees a sea turtle or nest can report it to local conservation groups, including Share the Beach.
