Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — Orange Beach City Schools recently announced the hiring of Terry Canova as the new Head Girls' Basketball Coach. Amanda Niehoff will join him as the Assistant Girls' Basketball Coach for the Makos. The pair brings extensive experience, including several Final Four appearances, to the local program. Both coaches are recognized for their leadership in Alabama high school athletics.

School officials announced the new coaching hires on April 10, 2026. Coach Canova will take the position after a long tenure at UMS-Wright Preparatory School. Coach Niehoff currently serves as head coach at Saraland High School before transitioning to her new role.

Coach Canova has compiled a career record of 453-221 during his tenure on the Gulf Coast. Over nearly 20 years, his teams have made 12 Sweet Sixteen appearances and nine Elite Eight finishes. He has led programs to three AHSAA Final Four appearances.

Coach Niehoff earned several area championships and led St. Paul's Episcopal School to three regional appearances. She also reached the Final Four at both St. Paul's Episcopal School and UMS-Wright. At UMS-Wright, she spent six years as a player and assistant.

"I am excited to welcome both Coach Canova and Coach Niehoff to Orange Beach," said Athletic Director Shane Alexander. He noted that the two form a powerful combination of experience and success and that Alexander believes they share a vision for the program.

Coach Canova's coaching philosophy emphasizes discipline, accountability, and a team-first mindset. His programs are well known for their preparation and excellence. He also focuses on developing student-athletes who demonstrate character and personal integrity.

Coach Niehoff will handle multiple responsibilities, including serving as the school's Summer Competition Coordinator. She is also set to lead player development at Orange Beach Elementary School, a role that helps build a foundation for the basketball program's future.

The addition of these coaches demonstrates a commitment to building a premier girls’ basketball program. School officials aim to prioritize student development and competitive achievement. The partnership between the two coaches ensures immediate alignment with the program's culture.
