Orange Beach Makos in the Running for Best Mascot in Alabama Contest

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Orange Beach City School's mascot, the Mako Shark, has been named one of the top contenders in Sports Illustrated’s statewide contest for the best school mascot in Alabama. The contest, hosted by Sports Illustrated in its High School Alabama section, allows fans and community members to vote for their favorite mascot among the top 10 high school mascots in the state.

The Orange Beach Makos have quickly gained recognition since the school opened in 2020. Named after the mako shark, a species known for its speed and agility, the mascot embodies the school's competitive spirit and coastal identity. The Makos represent not only school pride but also the broader Orange Beach community, where the Gulf of Mexico plays a central role in local culture and economy.

The contest pits the Makos against other popular mascots from high schools across Alabama, with voting open to the public. Orange Beach High School students, staff, and residents are encouraged to participate in the contest and showcase their community pride.

Voting can be done online through the Sports Illustrated website, and the results will be announced in the coming weeks. The Makos hope to swim their way to the top and claim the title of Alabama’s best school mascot.
