Seafood abounds, but there are great burgers here, too

(OBA®) – Orange Beach, AL – This is the third and final installment on great burgers found on the Alabama-Florida Gulf Coast. The coast is not only a paradise of natural beauty, it’s also known for its fabulous restaurants and variety of fresh seafood dishes all across the coastal area.


But if seafood is not exactly your fare, it’s also fast-becoming known for its cheeseburgers in paradise as well. Several places, some well-known already, some new to the scene and some hole in the wall joints are crafting awesome burgers from homestyle to fancy to just downright unique.


And tasty. The OBA Community Website decided to take a look at the burgers available on the Gulf Coast and you’ll probably find one you really like or learn about one you didn’t know existed and want to try. Here we go.


DUCK’S DINER


This breakfast/lunch stop has a choice of five burgers on its menu – all half-pound Angus patties – including the Bama Burger which has sauteed onions and mushrooms, bacon and provolone. The Cowboy Burger has cheddar, bacon, BBQ sauce and two onion rings. Put a little breakfast in your burger with the Sunrise Burger with an egg, bacon, lettuce, tomato and onions. The Patty Melt comes on rye and is smothered with grilled onions and Swiss cheese. Or the Classic Cheeseburger with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle.



FISHER’S AT ORANGE BEACH MARINA


Fisher’s Dockside has four burgers to choose from including a traditional double cheeseburger. The Bama Burger has bacon, pepperjack, fried Tabasco onions and BBQ sauce. The Fisher Burger comes with pimento cheese and bacon tomato jam. And the mushroom burger comes with sauteed mushrooms and Swiss cheese. All come with fries and are served on a brioche bun.


PLAYA AT SPORTSMAN MARINA


Fisher’s sister restaurant offers two burgers including a traditional cheeseburger with red onions, choice of American, Swiss or cheddar cheese with garlic aioli. The Playa burger comes dressed with a slice of pineapple, fried onions, cheddar, Playa BBQ and Alabama white BBQ sauce. Both come with fries and are served on brioche buns.


THE UNDERTOW


Known more for being a dive bar and late-night stop for service industry workers, the Undertow serves some of the best food on the island and at the top of the list are the burgers. A cheeseburger comes all the way with lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles, mayo, mustard and ketchup and has a great grilled flavor. The Swiss mushroom comes with sauteed mushrooms and onions. They don’t come with a side item but get the fried okra.


OSO AT BEAR POINT HARBOR


Oso offers two burgers including a double burger on a toasted bun with arugula, tomato, pickles, pickled red onion with a choice of cheese and $2 add-ons of bacon, jalapeno, fried jalapeno or tobacco onions. Next up is one of the most unique burgers around in Oso’s Hatch Burger with white American cheese, bacon, hatch chili salsa, Cajun fried onions, toasted bun, arugula, tomato and pickle. Comes with a choice of a side and the iron skillet potatoes are an excellent option or pick shoestring fries.


OSO EARLY


The breakfast Oso has a good burger, too. Grilled with aruluga, tomato, pickle and pickled red onions with a choice of one side. Add cheese for a buck and/or bacon for two bucks.


THE PANTRY


The Pantry at The Wharf Specialty Grocery serves up burgers on Tuesdays and Thursdays with two toppings: homemade 1,000 Island dressing and cheese.


SAUCED


The pizza place has some prime burgers made from house-ground brisket. The Alabama slammer has aged white cheddar, bacon tomato relish, and cayenne candied bacon. Just the Facts has lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle and mayo, add cheese for $149, bacon for $249. Shroom on Swish with a wild mushroom blend with a creamy Swiss cheese sauce. Protein Shake has lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mayo, bacon white cheddar and a fried egg. Do the Texas Two Step with slow-roasted brisket, house BBQ sauce, white cheddar and jalapenos.


The Craftsman is smashed burrata, house BBQ sauce, thick bacon and arugula. If you’re really hungry try the Going Pro with two half-pound patties, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mayo, thick bacon, cheddar and a fried egg. They all come with fries or the choice of another side.


BLEU’S BURGERS


This gourmet craft burger stop has 16 burger choices with beef and three with chicken so it’s gonna be next to impossible to feature them all. We’ll pick out a few but you can see them all here. 91880190


Of those, the Reuben Burgers has a half-pound patty, swiss, pork belly pastrami and creamy spicy garlic slaw on toasted marble rye. The Beer Cheeseburger has smoked cheddar, grilled onions, beer-pickled jalapenos, crispy onions and house beer cheese on brioche bun. The Easy Rider has caramelized onions, smoked gouda, arugula, crispy onions, spicy garlic aioli on a brioche bun. Each month one of the 16 burgers is tabbed the Donation Burger and 25 percent of those sales are generated to a selected charity. All are served with house fries or a side salad.


MCCLURE’S NY BAGEL & SANDWICH SHOPPE


McClure’s doesn’t offer a burger per se but has a tasty variety of sandwiches and wraps including the Roast Beef and Cheddar with bacon, lettuce, tomato and horseradish sauce. Sandwiches can be on bagels, croissants, bread or wraps and come with bagel chips, potato salad or pasta salad.


THE STEAMER


A burger at The Steamer comes with mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, onions and a side of potatoes – potato salad, new potatoes or chips. Cheese’ll cost you 99 cents.


BIG MIKE’S STEAKHOUSE


Big Mike’s offers the Chop House Burger, a ground in house 10-ounce Angus burger hand patted and grill with your choice of fixings among lettuce, tomato, onion and Wickles pickles. Served on a large brioche bun. Add cheese for $1.50, bacon for $2 and jalapeno or mushrooms for a buck. It comes with steak fries.


KING NEPTUNE’S


This seafood stop only has one burger, the Queen Diane Burger, and it is served with your choice of traditional toppings on a toasted garlic bun. Served with fries, add cheese for $1.25.


FRESH OFF THE BOAT


This San Roc Cay stop has a choice of three burgers. Redneck Riviera Burger is certified Angus topped with pulled pork, applewood bacon, cheddar cheese, house BBQ sauce and crispy fried onions on a toasted brioche bun. The Black & Bleu Burger is also Angus blackened and topped with applewood bacon, arugula, bleu cheese mayo and smoky onion jam on a toasted brioche bun. The Basic Beach Burger has the same patty as the other burgers topped with bibb lettuce, Roma tomato, pickled red onion, Tabasco ketchup and smokehouse mayo on a toasted brioche bun. The are served with one side, adding cheese or bacon will cost you a buck each.


BYWATER BEACHSIDE


This unique eatery on the Gulf State Park Pier offers a burger grilled and topped with American cheese and pickles. It’s served with chips and a pickle spear. Bill E's Small Batch Bacon costs extra.

As part of an environmental initiative, the beaches on Perdido Key have become the starting point for a project aimed at planting 453,000 shoreline plants along the coastline. This undertaking began in early spring and is scheduled to progress through the end of May.
Gulf Shores City Hall

Gulf Shores is making moves to start on phase two of the project adding a third southbound lane on State Route 59. Phase two of the project will be adding the lane from Cypress Bend Drive or the Target intersection to just north of County Road 6. To make this happen water and sewer mains will have to be moved from West 34th Avenue to County Road six. The portion from Cypress Bend Drive south to Fort Morgan Road has already been bid out.
Arnica Bay at Pirate's Cove Reopens for Swimmers as Water Quality Improves

The Alabama Department of Public Health has announced the lifting of the swimming advisories for Arnica Bay at Pirate's Cove, effective immediately. Issued on April 11, 2024, the advisories were a precautionary measure due to elevated levels of enterococci bacteria, which have now significantly dropped below the safety thresholds established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Following extensive testing and water quality assessments by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, the waters have been declared safe for public use, reassuring the community and visitors of the area's environmental health.
