Gulf Shores Seeks To Complete Streetscape Near New Pedestrian Bridge

The work session this evening will include a discussion of a design contract and several other city business items.
Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – Gulf Shores is looking to add some design work in the roadway project along East Second Street leading up to the pedestrian bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway. The city council will consider a contract with WAS Design for $42,300 to fill out the amenities in the newly streetscaped areas.
The council will discuss the contract at a work session on May 18 at 4 p.m. in council chambers.
“While the project included new stormwater infrastructure, on-street parking, and wide sidewalks, it did not include landscaping, lighting, and irrigation,” Planning Director Lee Jones states in a memo on the meeting agenda. “Approving the execution of a contract with WAS to perform these professional services will allow the City to complete these streets prior to the completion and opening of the pedestrian bridge.”
These improvements will be made along East Second Street from East 22nd Avenue to the new bridge and across the water on East Second Street from East 25th Avenue to Waterway East Boulevard.
During the work session, the council will also discuss:
- A declaration for National Public Works Week on May 17-23.
- Appointing Matthew Palamara and Michael Murphy to the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee through May 8, 2030, and Ike Williams to the Airport Authority for a six-year term ending June 1, 2032.
- Receiving the audit for fiscal year 2025 ending Dec. 31, showing the “city General
- Fund balance at 2025 year-end was $80.7 million, up from $79.5 million in 2024, resulting in an increase of $1,2 million.”
- A taxi cab franchise for One Love Shuttle to contract with businesses to provide transportation for H-2B and J-1 workers.
- Revisions to the employee handbook “to provide legal and operational compliance, consistency across departments, and clarity and protection for both employees and the city.”
- Two items on the city’s annual Fourth of July fireworks show. First, there’s a memorandum of understanding with Gulf State Park to use the state’s pier to shoot off the fireworks and a contract with PyroShows for $48,000. The show is set for 9 p.m. on July 4, with setup starting at 3 p.m. on July 3 and cleanup completed by 6 a.m. on July 4. July 5.
