Golf Carts in Gulf Shores: Safety Meets Sustainability

Golf Carts in Gulf Shores

Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – Gulf Shores City Council again has a request from its citizens to allow golf cart usage on West Lagoon Ave. While golf cart usage is allowed on most streets in Gulf Shores with a 25 mph speed limit, they are currently not allowed on West Lagoon Ave, which also has a 25 mph speed limit.

Monday evening, the Gulf Shores City Council received a request from resident Randy Quinn to permit the use of golf carts on West Lagoon. This proposition stems from the increasing popularity of golf carts as a mode of transportation in local communities. Their compact size, eco-friendly nature, especially the electric variants, and convenience make them a preferred choice for short-distance travel.

The primary worry is safety. West Lagoon Ave, with its unique traffic patterns and influx of tourists, poses challenges. Introducing golf carts into this mix could possibly exacerbate traffic issues and potentially lead to accidents.

Electric golf carts, in particular, have been championed as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional vehicles. They produce zero emissions, and are incredibly energy efficient. Moreover, they operate silently, reducing noise pollution in serene locales like Gulf Shores neighborhoods.

One of the significant issues raised was the use of out-of-state golf carts. Without a standardized set of rules governing their use across states, it becomes challenging to ensure that all golf carts on the roads meet the necessary safety standards.

The police department plays a pivotal role in this discussion. Their insights into the potential challenges and solutions surrounding golf cart usage are invaluable. They are particularly concerned about misuse by vacationers unfamiliar with local regulations. The potential for golf cart misuse by vacationers unfamiliar with local rules is a genuine concern. Educating tourists and implementing strict regulations could help mitigate these challenges.

The council's proactive approach, combined with input from the community and experts, will hopefully lead to a well-informed decision that benefits the Gulf Shores Community.
