City of Gulf Shores Celebrates Parks and Recreation Month

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (OBA) —  The City of Gulf Shores is preparing for a month of activities following the City Council's official proclamation of July as National Park and Recreation Month. City leaders said parks and recreation programs play an important role in health, fitness, and community life. The annual observance also recognizes the employees who maintain parks, recreation facilities, and public spaces throughout the city. Officials said those efforts help improve the quality of life for both residents and visitors.

The month-long celebration will run from July 1 through July 31, with special events throughout the month. Highlights include free admission to Studio Fit on July 2, a $2.50 Recreation Center day pass on July 4, Adult Recess on July 10, and 3-on-3 basketball tournaments on July 7 and July 14 at the Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Center. The full schedule is available on the
city's website

The proclamation presented to the council recognizes parks and recreation as essential to building healthy communities. It states that parks encourage physical activity, strengthen families, provide opportunities to learn new skills, and create spaces where people can connect with nature. The document also notes that public parks help protect the area's natural environment while providing residents with places to gather and enjoy the outdoors.

During the council meeting, city officials also recognized the work of the Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department. Staff members were praised for maintaining parks, athletic fields, walking trails, and other public spaces used year-round. City leaders said those employees help make Gulf Shores an attractive place to live and visit.

One of the featured events is Adult Recess, scheduled for July 10 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Meyer Park. The evening is for adults 18 and older and will include games, friendly competitions, food trucks, and adult beverages. City officials said the event offers adults a chance to relax, meet new people, and enjoy recreational activities outside organized sports. The local chamber will assist with beverage sales.

Basketball players will also have opportunities to compete during Park and Recreation Month. The city will host 3-on-3 adult basketball tournaments on July 7 and 14 at the Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Center. Tennis players can participate in Adult Tennis Tuesdays, and additional programs throughout the month are designed for residents of all ages.

National Park and Recreation Month is observed across the United States each July. Gulf Shores officials noted that the observance follows national recognition of parks and recreation and highlights the role local programs play in promoting health, wellness, environmental stewardship, and community involvement. They encouraged residents to participate in events and to explore the city's parks and recreation facilities throughout the month.
