Foley Council Sets Busy Agenda for February 19th

Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – The Foley City Council will have two meetings on February 19th, a special-called meeting at 3:30 p.m. to accept the fiscal year 2023 audited annual comprehensive financial report and at 4 p.m. will have a joint work/regular session.

 

During the work/regular session, the council will discuss:

 

  • Declaring Feb. 24 as Arbor Day in the city and accepting the donation of Arbor Day books.


  • A presentation by the Baldwin County chapter of the National Alliance for Mental Illness.
     
  • Approving paid bills for the month of January totaling just more than $7 million.

 

  • A report on tax collections in the city including $3.5 million in sales taxes or about $200,000 more than January 2023 and about $200,000 more than budget projections. In lodging taxes, Foley collected $88,605 or about $6,000 less than 2023 and $14,000 over budget projections.

 

  • A report from the Community Development Department on new permits issued in January for 103 single-family homes, two manufactured homes, one duplex and 31 apartments.

 

  • A report from the police department on activity in January including 205 inmates processed at the city jail, 13 arrests for simple assault domestic violence and 12 for shoplifting. Police officers were called for service 85 times during the month.

 

  • An introduction of an ordinance to amend code involving flood damage prevention. The council will also set a public hearing date on the amendment.

 

  • An ordinance to approve an agreement between the city and Baldwin County on subdivision regulations in the planning jurisdiction of Foley.

 

  • An ordinance accepting rights-of-way in the Majestic Manor Subdivision for city maintenance.


  • A resolution to approve street lighting for the entrance to Peachtree Subdivision.

 

  • A resolution adopting ways to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries in Foley.


  • A resolution to approve the rendering of the new sign for the Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermen’s Market.

 

  • Authorizing the start of a commercial kitchen in the Coastal Alabama Farmers and Fishermen’s Market by hiring McCoullough Architecture to design the new kitchen for $35,500.
     
  • Approving bids let by the city during January including $19,309 to Del-Con for and upgrade and relocation of the pavilion at Sara Thompson Kid's Park and $398636 to Donohoo Chevrolet for vehicles.


  • Buying playground equipment for the Nature Parks Department to replace some deteriorated swings for $9,337 from Backyard Solutions. The purchase will include six new swings, two infant swings and a play drum panel.


  • A change in the pay classification plan for the police department.


  • Waiving the fees for the use of Heritage Park and pavilion on Aug. 31 for a drug overdose awareness day by Big Fish Ministries.


  • Waiving the fees for the use of the Foley Civic Center for Boy Scout 77.


  • Approving a grant for a façade for Feast & Co. catering and bakery at 116 W. Laurel Ave.


  • Approving a proposal from Pillar for designing the first phase of the Pilgrim Street project for $25,850. The council will also consider a proposal from Pillar for designing phase two of the project for $21,540.


  • Declaring a message board sign destroyed in an accident as surplus and a request to buy a new one with the insurance settlement check of $14,929.


  • Using unbudgeted donations from the United States Police Canine Association for $15,000 to buy needed K9 equipment.

New Halo Lights to Brighten Foley Streets

Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — An Orange Beach man drowned in south Alabama Sunday afternoon, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. Dewayne Stephens, 55, of Orange Beach, was identified as the man who lost his life.
City of Foley Firefighters Praised for High Performance

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — Fire protection in Foley has gotten better over the past few years, even though firefighters are answering more calls than before. A national study showed that the city's fire service has improved. Mayor Ralph Hellmich said the higher score proves Foley’s firefighters are doing a great job under growing pressure. He credited Chief Joey Darby and the entire department for their work in keeping the community safe.

Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — The Foley Police Department is investigating a burglary that happened overnight at the Tanger Outlet Mall. An employee at Zales Outlet called the police around 8:30 a.m. Monday. They reported that jewelry had been stolen during the night. The value of the stolen items has not been released.
Mini Golf Planned for Bubba’s Seafood House Property

Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — A group of four people is planning a new mini-golf course at the site of longtime Bubba’s Seafood House on beach road. John Pilcher, Jody Pilcher, Mary Pilcher and Emmie Pilcher Flowers are making the request. According to Baldwin County tax records, the group owns six parcels fronting the road east of Fat Daddy’s. They will request changes to a previously submitted site plan.
