Fishing, festivals, and food lead the way into summer on the Gulf

Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — As Memorial Day ushers in the unofficial start of summer, the Gulf Coast enters a vibrant stretch of seasonal activity. From solemn remembrances to spirited celebrations, the week ahead offers a balanced blend of reflection and recreation. Families and friends will gather at beaches, parks, and local events, making the most of the long weekend and the warmer weather ahead. Whether it's honoring military service, exploring the outdoors, enjoying live music, or indulging in iconic coastal fare, there’s something for everyone to enjoy along the water’s edge.

This week’s calendar spans a wide range of opportunities—early morning walks through Gulf State Park’s backcountry, beachside concerts, indoor amusements, culinary traditions, and a few quirky Gulf Coast celebrations that locals have come to love. Whether you're a visitor or a year-round resident, the coming days are packed with ways to connect with the community, explore the natural beauty of the region, and celebrate the season’s arrival with classic coastal character.

Monday, May 26th —
On the last Monday in May, residents particularly of the United States will observe a federal holiday dedicated to honoring and reflecting on the sacrifices made by military heroes in service to their country. This day formally recognizes the dedication and bravery exhibited by these individuals. Many people will gather with friends and family for traditional outdoor celebrations, which often include backyard barbecues featuring music, fireworks, and recreational activities such as beach vacations to kick off the summer. Rouses Markets has introduced a variety of promotional offers to coincide with both, valid through May 28th. The sale includes daily value packs of lean ground beef, perfect for grilling hamburgers, along with competitive pricing on chicken, fish, and ribs. Additionally, the promotional advertisements highlight an extensive selection of condiments, including dips, beans, sauces, and grilling essentials like charcoal and hydration beverages plus a few adult ones. For those looking to enhance their holiday menu Gulf Coast style, Rouses offers freshly prepared boiled crawfish with potatoes, available in-store for $4.99 a pound. To maintain the patriotic theme of the holiday, customers can also find red, white, and blue cupcakes or strawberry shortcake for dessert. Monday also marks the beginning of Main Street Beats, held from 6-9 PM at the Wharf. Kids can safely dance down Main Street during this closed-off street party, and they can pet or observe animals from the Reptile Bus or get their faces painted. This event runs all season long, concluding on July 28th, and features free admission and parking, with some activities costing between $5 and $10. Extra highlights for the opening night, which will coincide with Memorial Day celebrations, will include fireworks and the kid-favorite Bubble Truck. Don’t miss out on family fun and great prices as the town pays tribute to the fallen and welcomes the summer season.

Saturday, May 31st —
This Saturday on the Gulf Coast is blended with harmonious birdwatching, biking, and full stop–indulgence of the Bushwacker. For those unfamiliar, a Bushwacker is a decadent adult milkshake, rich in chocolate and cocoa, but also calorie-dense—perfectly setting this 3-hour B&B stage for a celebratory day that marks the 50th anniversary of this iconic drink. Kick off your day with an organized birding and biking tour, expertly led by Donald Dehm from Alabama Audubon, tailored for both novice and experienced birders. This expedition will run from 7 AM to 10 AM, allowing participants to immerse themselves in the local avifauna before joining the big fun festivities at Flora-Bama, which commence at 11 AM. The Bama will host a grand celebration in honor of five decades of the Bushwacker, a beverage whose roots lie in St. Thomas gained renown along the Gulf Coast, particularly at the Original Flora-Bama. In addition to the traditional revelry, Flora-Bama will add an interactive twist by concealing 10 golden Bushwackers across its properties—five to be found during the week leading up to the celebration and five on the anniversary day itself. Participants are encouraged to engage with social media for clues, or to visit the venue daily for hints. Those who locate the hidden treats can submit them on the 31st for a chance to win an entry into a grand prize drawing, which includes a trip back to Bushwackers roots –St. Thomas, complete with airfare and lodging. This celebration of the Bushwacker is not only a nod to its heritage, but an invitation to partake in an engaging community experience. Happy Birthday and happy birding and biking.
