Bridge Carries 25% More Traffic Over Holiday Weekend After Toll Removal

Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Traffic on the Beach Express Bridge increased by 25 percent over Memorial Day weekend after the toll was removed. This change has made the bridge a more popular choice for drivers heading to Alabama's beaches.

On May 23, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) bought the bridge for $57 million and immediately removed the toll. This allowed the bridge to be toll-free just in time for the busy Memorial Day weekend.

Brian Aaron, ALDOT's Assistant Southwest Region Engineer, said the toll removal has already shown positive results. "Our goal has always been to reduce congestion on Highway 59, so we're off to a good start."

ALDOT plans to remove the toll booth structures to improve traffic flow further. The goal is to eliminate slowdowns caused by the booths, making travel more efficient.

This move is part of ALDOT's efforts to improve accessibility for residents and visitors. By removing the toll, travel to Alabama's beaches has become easier and more affordable.
