The 3rd Annual Charter Boat Billfish Tournament kicks off today, marking the start of a competitive week as teams vie for the heaviest catch. Weigh-ins commence at 5 PM on Friday at Mo Fishin Bar, located at Zeke’s Landing. Spectator engagement peaks during these weigh-ins, as the tension builds while teams reveal their catches. However, many enthusiasts argue that the true adrenaline is found during the shotgun start at Perdido Pass, where crews are poised for launch in an exhilarating race against time. From early morning until noon, vessels will depart from various back bay marinas, making their way toward the starting point. Optimal vantage points for viewing include Tacky Jack’s Orange Beach, Cobalt, and The Gulf, each offering strategic waterfront perspectives. For those preferring an uninterrupted beachfront experience, numerous public beach sites allow for early placements and a day filled with sun and excitement. Regardless of your chosen viewing method, witnessing a fleet of any kind of boat embark on this timed competition is an experience unlike any other. The strategic planning involved in optimizing catches and calculating potential winnings onshore adds another layer to the event. The Shot -gun sounds off at noon. Be sure to return to Zeke’s on Friday for updates on which vessel claims the championship title.

Despite being less than fifty years old, Orange Beach has a rich historical backdrop that precedes its establishment. The Orange Beach History Museum serves as a repository of the area's heritage, showcasing a range of artifacts that reflect the region's evolution, including remnants of Native American culture and the stories of early fishing families. Visitors can explore an array of memorabilia generously contributed by some of the early settlers who formed the community along the Gulf Coast. On Tuesday, after 11 AM, the museum will host Linda Callaway, a descendant of one of Orange Beach's earliest families from the 1800s. Mrs. Callaway will provide insights into the town's history, share anecdotes, and engage in a Q&A session, also touching on details about her late husband, Earl, and other early community members. This event presents a unique opportunity to delve deeper into the historical context of one of Alabama's cherished coastal towns. Additionally, coinciding with local election day for Orange Beach, Gulf Shores, and Foley, it serves as an ideal moment to gain a broader understanding of the area’s civic landscape.

If you’re prepared to expand your household by welcoming a new companion animal or considering the temporary responsibilities of pet ownership, ‘A Place of Hope Rescue’ offers an ideal solution. This non-profit organization operates through community support, striving to rescue animals and facilitate adoptions, particularly small-breed dogs. Despite their dense populations, our coastal towns are often perceived as somewhat rural due to their unique landscapes characterized by swampy, mossy, and sandy environments. This geographical context presents distinct challenges for homeowners that differ significantly from those encountered in more inland areas. In response, local business owners and park enthusiasts have collaborated to sponsor a free, space-limited workshop designed to address these complexities. The Coastal Landowner Workshop will commence at 9:30 AM and last for four and a half hours, offering in-depth demonstrations, practical tools, regulatory insights, and innovative ideas aimed at empowering landowners in the region. Given Alabama's abundant water resources—encompassing streams, rivers, and coastal watersheds—effective forest management is crucial for maintaining water quality within our communities. Participants will engage in discussions on the implications of invasive species management, the importance of sustainable forest practices and will benefit from a personalized tour of Graham Creek Nature Preserve. The workshop will also cover topics such as Forest Certifications, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of sustainable land stewardship. This workshop presents an invaluable opportunity for participants to deepen their knowledge, foster connections with like-minded individuals, and play a vital role in preserving the quality of our aquatic ecosystems and soil health. Lunch will be provided, and attendees are encouraged to bring additional water and be prepared for an interactive learning experience that highlights the critical link between forest management and water resources. Registration ends Wednesday, August 27th details can be found below.
