South Baldwin breaks ground on freestanding emergency department

New Gulf Shores building going up near the airport with Highway 59 access
(OBA®) – Gulf Shores, AL – On June 18, South Baldwin Regional Medical Center welcomed community, business and healthcare leaders to a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the beginning of construction at the new South Baldwin Regional Medical Center Freestanding Emergency Department in Gulf Shores.
The freestanding emergency department, which will be located adjacent to Jack Edwards Airport in Gulf Shores, with State Route 59 frontage, will be available 24-7 to serve patients who experience medical emergencies.
“We are committed to expanding access to emergency services to meet the needs of our rapidly growing community,” said SBRMC Chief Executive Officer Daniel McKinney. “SBRMC Freestanding Emergency Department will provide faster access to emergency care for people living in the area south of our main campus. We are dedicated to bring the same award-winning quality and safety care to this facility as our main campus.”
Many emergency services can be effectively managed at freestanding emergency departments without the need for transfer to a traditional hospital setting. Like any hospital ER, the new SBRMC building will be equipped to treat patients with illnesses and injuries that require a higher level of care than urgent care facilities offer. The 14,400 square-foot facility will have a helipad, nine private patient rooms with radiology and lab services on-site.
If a higher level of care is required, patients can be transported quickly to the main campus. Emergency healthcare experienced physicians, registered nurses and other patient care providers will staff the center.
“Our team of emergency physicians is excited about all of the current projects involving emergency medicine in Baldwin County. Between SBRMC Freestanding ED and our main hospital ED, we will be well-equipped to handle the emergency needs of those living in and visiting the Gulf Coast community for years to come,” Dr. William Beazley, Medical Director for the SBRMC Emergency Department said.
Construction is expected to start July 2020 with an anticipated opening of summer 2021. More than 30 new jobs will be created to serve patients at the new center, including registered nurses and lab, imaging, admitting and environmental services staff. Perdido Key, Fla. – (OBA) – A mix of green and loggerhead sea turtles, ranging from juveniles to adults, were released Wednesday morning into the Gulf of Mexico after being rehabilitated. The turtles had been accidentally hooked by fishermen off local fishing piers and were treated at the Gulfarium's CARE Center in Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – Two requests before the Orange Beach Planning Commission for housing developments near Sam’s store and northwest of Caswell received unfavorable recommendations from the panel. But that doesn’t mean the developments won’t proceed.
Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – The pedestrian bridge planned in Gulf Shores over the Intracoastal Waterway at East Second Street is still in the design phase, Mayor Robert Craft said following a regular council meeting on May 13.
Ryan Shamburger, general manager of Big Beach Brewing and a resident of the neighborhood framed by East Second Street and Canal Road, said several of the residents approached him with questions about the bridge. He asked for an update on the construction.
Foley, Ala. – (OBA) – A Foley man was arrested and charged with assault after shooting his brother during an altercation on Monday. According to the Foley Police Department, 28-year-old Deion McMillan was shot in the leg by his brother, Quave McMillan, 31, at their family property on Airport Road.
Orange Beach, Ala. – (OBA) – The city of Orange Beach is hosting a blood drive in partnership with LifeSouth Community Blood Centers. Scheduled for Thursday, May 16, 2024, this vital community event will take place at the Orange Beach City Hall, located at 4099 Orange Beach Blvd. The LifeSouth Bloodmobile will be on site from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to facilitate the donations.

Orange Beach Parks and Recreation has announced a fun and artsy contest where participants can showcase their skills by designing decorative birdhouses.

Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – The Gulf Shores High School Boys Soccer Team won the State Championship and it is time to celebrate. Superintendent Matt Akin announced to the City Council that the celebration would take place on Wednesday the 15th at LuLu's in Gulf Shores. The festivities will begin at 6 PM.
