Saturday’s Celebration in Orange Beach Marks the Army’s 250th Anniversary
The event includes re-enactors, patriotic music, and proclamations

Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — A patriotic event honoring America’s early military history will take place Saturday in Orange Beach. The Sons of the American Revolution and local Daughters of the American Revolution will host a flag display and presentation. The free event runs from 3 to 5 p.m. in front of the Orange Beach Event Center. Organizers invite the public to learn more about two major milestones from the American Revolution.
The celebration on June 14 marks the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army’s founding in 1775. That year, the Second Continental Congress created the Continental Army, with George Washington named commander in chief. Just three days later, the Battle of Bunker Hill took place.
On June 17, 1775, over 2,300 British soldiers attacked 3,500 American defenders near Bunker Hill in Boston. The British suffered over 1,000 casualties, including many officers. Though the Americans eventually retreated after running out of ammunition, the battle boosted their morale.
From 3 to 5 p.m., members of SAR and DAR will set up a pavilion with historical displays and period music. Re-enactors dressed in Revolutionary War attire will greet visitors and share facts about the battle and the early Army.
At 5 p.m., the ceremony moves to the flagpole at the Event Center. A joint color guard will present historic flags and raise the 13-star American flag over The Wharf. City officials will read a proclamation honoring both anniversaries.
The event is family-friendly and aims to educate the public on Revolutionary history. The General Galvez Chapter of SAR is coordinating the program with support from local DAR members.
