Orange Beach to Consider Spending Opioid Funds on Defibrillators

Zoning change sought for Village of Tannin firehouse lot

Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — Orange Beach is looking to spend $287,604 received from opioid litigation settlements. The council wants to buy automated external defibrillators for the fire department. The council will discuss authorizing the money and buying the defibrillators at an upcoming work session. They will replace aging equipment.
The council will meet in a joint regular/work session on June 3 at 5 p.m. in council chambers at city hall. The vote on the defibrillators will not likely come until the next regular session on June 17.
During the regular session, the council will also discuss:
- Approving payments of more than $2 million for good services from May 22 to June 4.
- Awarding the bid for conducting a Visioning and Strategic Plan, Comprehensive Plan, Zoning Ordinances Update, and Infrastructure Evaluation for Future Growth Study to the Walker Collaborative for $187,282.
- Allowing for a zoning change for lot one in the Village of Tannin from special purpose or a firehouse to single-family residential.
- Authorize a resolution for an agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation to install, operate and maintain a traffic light at The Wharf Parkway East entrance. The once undeveloped parcels on either side of the entrance now have a Culver’s restaurant and a Cumberland gas station/convenience store.
- Authorizing two taxi franchises for CrozzzCabz and a renewal for Ms. Mary’s Taxi Service.
- A change order with Arrington Curb & Excavation for additional milling and paving in the 2025 resurfacing project for $32,800.
During the work session, the council will discuss:
- Approving the audited financial statements for 2023.
- Appointing J. Martin Pitts to the Construction Board of Adjustment and Appeals through June of 2030.
- Authorizing a franchise for BCC Waste Solutions to dispose of commercial solid waste, construction and demolition debris in the city.
- Setting a public hearing for an ordinance change in the planned unit development for Oasis at Orange Beach, or the former Phoenix West II, to amend the section on signs. The suggested date was June 17.
