Coastal Currents & Curious Adventures
A week of wildlife walks, waterfront sips, creative sparks, coastal races, and a spelling bee with a splash of swagger.

Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — March arrives like a refreshing coastal breeze—salty, sun-kissed, and full of potential. Along the shores of Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, which means "safe harbor," you'll find exactly that: a sanctuary where migratory birds return, wildflowers awaken, and hikers slow their pace to witness something extraordinary. Just down the road, you can enjoy sunset toasts at Tacky Jacks, watch dolphins glide near Bear Point Harbor, or explore the creations of artisans at the Gulf Coast Center for Ecotourism & Sustainability. Runners rally at Perdido Beach Resort, while brave wordsmiths take the stage at the Flora-Bama Package and Lounge. Whether you're lacing up your sneakers, raising a glass, or scanning the horizon with borrowed binoculars, this week promises a little sunshine for every kind of soul.

Join fellow naturalists for a special guided walk called “I Spy.” The meeting time is 11 AM at the Chan West Pine Beach Observation Tower, located within the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. This area offers hikers an up-close experience with the coast, providing plenty of opportunities to spot native wildlife and plant life across 7,000 acres of coastal barrier habitats. What makes this place unique is its history and its purpose, true to its French name, which means “safe harbor.” It serves to protect endangered migratory birds and other threatened species in their natural habitat. These guided walks help educate participants about one of the last remaining undisturbed habitats on the Gulf Coast–all while enjoying its beauty. There is no cost or reservation needed for this event. Just pack water and any other gear you might want, such as binoculars. If you don’t have binoculars, don’t worry; the team of guides will have some extras to share during the walk. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes! During the hike, you’ll have the chance to look for and learn about birds, insects, reptiles, and various flora along the trails. It’s a great way to start a new month and welcome the warmer weather and new life that spring awakens. Happy trails!

The rustle of spring is in the air, and boats, cruises, charters, and all things outdoors are emerging from their winter hibernation and are ready to entertain. Each year, the local dolphin cruises and other charter vessels take a much-needed break from the water. The dolphin cruises, in particular, herald the arrival of spring as they resume operations, gliding through the waters to showcase our local bottlenose dolphins to eager visitors. Dolphins typically travel only 10-20 miles from where they are born, so they are always nearby. After their winter break, they, too, are excited to be seen again and engage with visitors through various natural behaviors in their habitat. What better way to kick off the season than with the original dolphin cruise—the first of its kind in the area and still going strong—offered by Cold Mil Fleet, based out of Bear Point Harbor? To book a tour, simply visit the link below and choose your preferred day. On Wednesdays, there’s a cruise at 1:30 PM, just in time to enjoy the warmer sunshine—though light jackets or sweatshirts are recommended. The tour lasts 60 to 90 minutes and typically operates as a two-boat tour. This setup accommodates large groups and also welcomes smaller parties, so be sure to make your reservations in advance. The boats will take you on a scenic ride through the back bays, where you can look for dolphins, birds, and other exciting wildlife in unforgettable close-up encounters. Gather your friends, ride with the seasoned pros, and enjoy the beauty of springtime emerging on the Gulf Coast!

Stop by the Orange Beach Public Library this week for an exciting hands-on class about the traditional Japanese art of Shibori, which involves dyeing fabrics using folding techniques to create unique designs. Each piece you design will be a one-of-a-kind work of art that you can take home! Registration is required for this event, and there are still a few spots available. After the class, you can use your dyed fabrics to sew small pillows, outfits for dolls, or even frame them to display as your own artwork in your home. No matter how you choose to celebrate your creation, this engaging learning experience will instill a sense of pride and history in your work. Please note that this is an adult class, as the techniques can be a bit tricky. However, there are plenty of other fun activities available for kids at the library throughout the week, including cozy reading nooks where they can spend time. Participants are encouraged to arrive early to explore the library's shelves and have plenty of time to make their way to the art room a few minutes before the class starts at 2:30 PM. Good luck with your dyeing and folding, and may you all leave feeling more artistic and knowledgeable!

Things are picking up on the coast, with plenty of exciting events to capture everyone's interest. The Perdido Beach Resort is hosting its 3rd Annual Half Marathon, Fun Run, and 5K event, all starting before 8 AM. Like most runs, this one is for a good cause—not just to promote fitness but also to support the Jennifer Claire Moore Foundation. This foundation focuses on the overall well-being of our communities and the mental health of our youth across Baldwin County. For more information, see the link below. Sign up now to be a part of this scenic race, which concludes at the resort with prizes, food, and more. Just down the beach, you'll find surfers of all ages and skill levels taking on the waves in the area's first-ever locally organized surf competition–where the public is encouraged to attend and cheer them on. More information about this event can be found in our related article below. Don't forget to check out the Ballyhoo Festival of Fine Arts and Culture at Lake Shelby Gulf State Park, just down the way. This festival takes place on both Saturday and Sunday and isn't your typical arts, crafts, and entertainment event. It features juried fine art from over 110 artists nationwide and deeply honors the rich culture of the Poarch Creek Indians, who perform native dances and encourage crowd participation in parts. The festival celebrates the early Americana Appalachian music era complemented with fiddle and banjo competitions, food trucks, and live music. Admission is free, vendor booths will have items and food for sale, but the fine art scene, culture, and memories made are priceless. It’s festival season, y’all—get outside and have a great time!
Sunday, March 8th-
