Gulf Shores Schools Welcome Phin the New Comfort Dog

Gulf Shores, Ala. — (OBA) — Gulf Shores City Schools is welcoming a new member to its campuses as Phin, a ten-month-old Goldendoodle, begins her service as the district’s first comfort dog. The school system says she will support student well-being. Officials note she has been specially trained for this role. Her arrival marks a new step in helping students and staff.

The announcement was made as the district moved into the Thanksgiving season. Phin will be formally welcomed today at 10:00 AM at Gulf Shores Middle School.

Phin received extensive training from Smeraglia & Co. of Robertsdale. District leaders say her gentle temperament and preparation make her ready to support social-emotional needs across all schools. She will rotate among the three campuses on a regular schedule to ensure broad access for students.

“Phin represents our commitment to supporting the whole child,” said Dr. Matt Akin, Superintendent of Gulf Shores City Schools. “We are thankful for the generosity of Mayor Craft and his wife, Trudy, and grateful for Langston Animal Hospital’s support. Phin will bring comfort, joy, and meaningful emotional support to students and staff across all campuses.”

Phin will work closely with the district’s Mental Health Coordinator and the Director of Exceptional Education. Her role is expected to support students in ways that strengthen connections and reduce anxiety. Officials say her presence will add another tool to the district’s efforts to maintain a supportive learning environment.

Her schedule will allow students at every grade level to interact with her. District leaders believe this regular rotation will help her become a familiar and calming presence. They say they expect her to bring steady comfort to classrooms and common areas.

The school system encourages the community and media to attend the welcome event. Officials say the introduction marks an important moment in expanding support for students. They believe Phin will play a meaningful role in the daily life of the district moving forward.
