Gulf Shores High's Amanda Talantis Earns National Green Award
Gulf Shores, Ala. – (OBA) – Gulf Shores' own Amanda Talantis has been honored with the 2024 Best of Green Schools Award. This recognition is given to those who lead the way in making schools more sustainable. The award comes from the Center for Green Schools at the U.S. Green Building Council and the Green Schools National Network. They celebrate efforts to advance the green school movement.
For 17 years, Talantis has taught at Gulf Shores High School, focusing on ecotourism and sustainability. Her work has helped the school district gain national recognition. The district is now known as a USDOE Green Ribbon School, thanks to her efforts.
Talantis also runs the "Small Town, Big Garden" Project. The project allows students to grow vegetables that are used in school meals. She is involved in many school teams and leads various sustainability and wellness programs. These include a farm-to-table event, a greenhouse project, recycling, and fitness programs like the Dolphin Walk and yoga classes.
Jessica Sampley, who directs the school's academies and career and technical education, praises Talantis for her dedication. She highlights how Talantis works beyond school hours, engaging students in sustainability projects. Talantis's work not only impacts the school but also the Gulf Shores community.

Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — Chef Ben Rosen and Sous Chef Walker Hughes from The Depot in Auburn won the Alabama Seafood Cook-Off with their dish called “Alabama Summer.” The event took place at The Wharf in Orange Beach, where four teams competed for the top spot. Rosen’s dish featured marinated, pecan-grilled cobia, sweet corn with Bill-E’s bacon, risotto fried green tomato, cobia confit with lump blue crab, charred peach and blistered okra relish, and black lemon herb butter. The cook-off is known for showcasing Alabama-grown products and Gulf seafood.
Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — North Chicago Street and the new stretch of East Jessamine Avenue are now open in Foley. These roads are part of the latest upgrades to Heritage Park. The improvements aim to make the downtown area more walkable. The new additions are designed to connect key parts of the city more easily.
Gulf Shores, Ala. — (OBA) — Nature lovers, families, and birdwatchers are invited to a brand-new event celebrating wildlife and conservation. Nest Fest promises a fun, educational, and family-friendly day at the Lake Shelby picnic area in Gulf State Park. Guests can enjoy outdoor activities, explore local wildlife, and connect with others who care about nature. The event is free and open to the public.
Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — To tell the tale of the beloved beach beverage, the Bushwacker, is to spin the lyrics of a sea shanty of sorts. Fifty years ago, a seaside bartender named Angie was pouring and stirring new concoctions.
Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — Foley is celebrating new improvements in its downtown area. The city will hold a dedication for upgrades at Heritage Park, Chicago Street, and the new East Jessamine Avenue extension. The event takes place today, Friday, May 30 at 11am. City officials hope the changes will make downtown more welcoming for everyone.
Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — Alabama shrimpers will soon be able to start harvesting shrimp in state waters. The Marine Resources Division of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) announced the opening. Shrimping will begin at 6 a.m. on Sunday, June 1, 2025. All inside waters not permanently closed by law or regulation will be open for shrimp harvesting.
Gulf Shores, Ala. — (OBA) — A new type of leadership is what Gulf Shores resident and businesswoman Angie Swiger says is what the city wants. Swiger announced her bid to run for the mayor of Gulf Shores.
Foley, Ala. — (OBA) — A parent in Foley is facing a serious charge after police looked into a report from a local school. A School Resource Officer was told about possible child abuse on April 24, 2025. After further investigation, police say a child was harmed by a parent.
Orange Beach, Ala. — (OBA) — The Wharf in Orange Beach has awarded scholarships to two high school seniors for their achievements in academics, leadership, and community service. Cami Wiles was named the winner of the 2025 Wharf Scholarship and received $10,000. Hudson Wilmott was chosen as the runner-up and awarded $2,500. The Wharf’s scholarship program aims to support local students who show dedication to both their studies and their communities.
